Moscow understands that the provision of $330 bln of CBR assets for Ukraine would be a game changer - assuring financing for 2-3y to come, enabling Ukraine to buy the full range of Western conventional military kit to defend itself & win the war.

Ukrainians accept that wartime demands some centralisation of power. But the anti-corruption crackdown was one step too far. Describing these protests as ‘anti-governmental’ is reductive: they are about honouring the sacrifices made for a free 🇺🇦

Russia’s defence spending is projected to exceed 6% of GDP by 2025.

Yet, as Mathieu Boulegue explains, its military-industrial complex is in decline - constrained by sanctions, war-related strain & structural inefficiencies.

"Recognition of Crimea’s annexation would not only be a symbolic break with longstanding US policy but a seismic blow to the international legal order – and a gift to revisionist powers everywhere", writes Senior Research Fellow Natalie Sabanadze in her @chathamhouse.org expert comment.
Trump’s proposal to recognize Crimea as Russian would set a dangerous precedent
Rewarding Moscow with Crimea would become a template for future violations of sovereignty and a precedent for states with similar aims – notably China.
