fun fact: there was a proliferation of bootleg and third party lightguns after Sega opted not to bring over the official lightgun due to the recent Columbine shooting.

So, indirectly, the Columbine shooting contributed to the rise of weird, realistic toy guns like these.

actually that wasn't fun
much love to every "we just gutted an airsoft gun and stuck controller parts in it" light gun, especially that custom Desert Eagle (with blowback!)

this amazingly un-catchy URL for a *flagship web-driven game release* not only hearkens to a time when nobody bothered making their addresses memorable, but also didn't bother registering useful domains

at that exact moment, Sonic Team dot com was already taken by a fansite!

Chu Chu Rocket is an Action Puzzle-Game by Sonic Team, where you direct mice to your goal by placing Arrow Tiles on the grid

The gameplay is as basic as could be, but the emergent strategy and psychological mind-games that stem from this core gameplay-loop lend it immense depth!

An absolute blast!

Konami: "when we try bring Mystical Ninja games to the US they sell poorly. Americans just don't understand this franchise no matter how we advertise it"

EGM October 1999:

People really, REALLY wanted to believe that Project Ares (Eternal / Skies of Arcadia) was going to be a Phantasy Star revival, but it was not; the actual Phantasy Star revival two years later was actually a Diablo clone. Things might have been very different.

The fall 1999 print ad for Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast cuts together screens from in front of Twinkle Park, then in front of the Hotel, and then all the way into the "At Dawn" segment of Speed Highway, as if they are a single contiguous scene

boy I hope somebody got fired for that blunder

"Vanilla Monkey Ball" implies the existence of another, significantly kinkier Monkey Ball
Most people are more familiar with the console port, Super Monkey Ball, but vanilla Monkey Ball was released earlier that year exclusively for Sega NAOMI

Gameplay is simple, yet insanely difficult, tasking player to roll a monkey in a ball to a goal by titling the stage itself.

A timeless classic!

damning testimony by seminal Sonic Hater @mikedrucker.bsky.social (EGM #112, Oct 1998)

the greatest lie the devil ever told was that Sonic Adventure was going to run at 60fps (EGM #112, 1998)

also I'm still a diehard Diehard GameFan fan, but EGM clearly went out of their way to hire somebody with real art degrees to do these impeccably crisp layouts.

FUN FACT: it was actually personal in the first game too
Shenmue II US DC print advertisement from EGM, November 2001. The switch to Xbox-exclusive was so last-minute, it's hard to believe US DC copies weren't already being pressed.

In 1994, the Sonic 3 air attack is called the "Insta-Shield" despite not actually functioning as a shield

In 2022's Sonic Origins, the move is renamed "Double Spin Attack" despite now functioning as a shield

In Simpsons 3F18 Skinner calls his hams steamed despite obviously being grilled

If you take one ancillary Sega factoid away from my entire existence, please make it this one
Furballs released on Dreamcast under the name Fur Fighters, with an enhanced PS2 port titled Fur Fighters: Viggo's Revenge released in June 2001. One of the opening levels of this game takes place on the roof of the world trade center, which features this games store downstairs. Lots to unpack here.
