updated intro post, which doubles as a "why your friends should follow me" post--now with alt text!

hey everyone, I'm Nate--I talk a lot about movies, comics from around the world, and the joy of (consensual) fighting

when I say I'm a real-life retired shonen hero, I'm not joking

the only reason I'm so comfortable with/"successful" at dating and relationships is that the bar is in hell

Superman and Spider-Man are both always like "I'm leaving you here for the cops to pick up" because "throw them in jail" is what nice superheroes do

yeah yeah copaganda is a thing, but "policeman" in fiction is usually just shorthand for "here's the end point where the villain is safely dealt with"

this is how I feel every time someone's like "[superhero, usually Batman] should focus on practical solutions to social issues" to try and sound woke and smart

okay dude, but did you actually read the comic where the ancient cult has zombies attacking the city, or are you just pontificating here
Echoing the asinine Cyberpunk 2077 critiques expressing disappointment that the story didn't focus entirely on toppling the megacorps and Ending Capitalism, and that it also let you Work With Cops. As if the way the story handled both of these things isnt, you know, the entire fucking point.
Someone noted that our game failed to solve capitalism and it reminded me how disappointed I was when the Jodie Foster film Contact didn't explain what happens when we die.

this is why we cook at every house party

not because it's an easy way to get some (it does help), but because it severely cuts down on hangovers and general alcohol-related discomfort

Played the opening mission in the OG version of MGS 3 on PS2 and in MGS Delta and it’s almost refreshing that after years of me being nonchalant about video game remakes changing things, I finally have a game where I can be snooty and say “I think the original Snake Eater looks and plays better”

It's also bleakly funny that even in 2022 I thought it was laying it on awful thick about tech bro douches, but if anything Norton's character is way too aware of other people as a concept and is at least attempting to fake an interesting inner life.
Pregaming for Wake Up Dead by watching Glass Onion, for some reason it especially pleases me that Rian Johnson has Blanc quote "My God, it's full of stars" and make note that the line is from 2010 not 2001.

a lot of Star Trek has the latter problem, but it's honestly believable that somebody on the ship happened to be working on, I dunno, a gravity polaron matrix or whatever that can solve the exact problem they're having that episode

I think the if/thens of battle should be consistent to a point

the main character(s) get to break those rules because they're the main character(s), but the rules need to be put in place first (and maybe hard-check the characters early on just so we can see what the limits are, to start)

I like a magic system in *video games,* where I'm actually playing and learning how it works

but if I'm reading a story, they can just do whatever the story needs--that's perfectly fine
“I need compelling worldbuilding and a hard magic system to make my fantasy world” NO YOU DON’T! You need a plot outline and interesting characters based on insecurities or fetishes don’t get distracted!
