The fact that it’s 45 min longer than driving seems not too bad to me, especially for a brand new service with little infrastructure upgrades or schedule priority

Pretty cool visualization of a day of Metra operations in the Chicago area. Certainly looks more frequent than I would have thought, although evenings and weekends probably aren’t great.

Unfortunately I feel like there’s a bit of this when it comes to party cohesion.

But I suppose GOP in Disarray is better than the alternative

The Lower East Side is really the closest Milwaukee has to true urban living, where not having a car isn't a big hindrance.

Here's my idea for those two intersections. Going to downtown, you'd get on at Prospect while going up to UWM would be at Farwell

Random Street Design Post:
An idea for Prospect and North, which adds a 2-way cycle track to the east side and a contra flow bus lane along the west side.

Arrows indicate routing of the 3 bus routes through here:
- Light Blue: Route 21
- Dark Blue: Maryland 30
- Gold: Downer 30

Since Milwaukee is now in SubwayBuilder, I tried out my ideal rail rapid transit design (4 Light Rail lines, 6 Regional Rail lines). Here's the simulated ridership for each line over the previous 24 hours. Seems pretty good to me!

I wonder where the mid block crossing should go

And the more traditional chart showing the margin in each region. Obama is obviously the GOAT, winning both regions in his runs.

Interesting to me is how Dems have (so far) stopped the bleeding in the rural region, with Harris only 0.7 pts behind Clinton.
December 5, 2025 at 9:24 PM
Here's a chart of this data using DRA results. This shows how the distribution of Dem voters in each region have shifted over time. While Obama had nearly an even draw from each region, now Dems received 55-57% of their votes from the more urban blue region
December 5, 2025 at 9:17 PM
What this means is that, to have a fair map, arguably the green region should have 2 Safe R, 1 Lean D, and 1 Safe D district and the blue region should have 2 Safe D, 1 Lean R, and 1 Safe R district.

While the latter is pretty easy (and the current setup), the former is probably impossible

Fun Fact about Wisconsin: using the 2020 Census data, these two regions, formed using only counties, are almost identical in population.
December 5, 2025 at 8:18 PM
Yeah, it's a bit of pack, but Dane and Rock counties are super close to a single district.

Just drew this one up, which is similar to what I've done in the past, showing Baldwin's 2024 results

Ahh yes, no turn on red when streetcar is present.

Heading home from Chicago on this cold snowy Monday

Big yikes that it took 50% longer this morning than usual.

Amtrak: “We know most of our riders are new and inexperienced, so we’ll make boarding incredibly simple, even if it’s inconvenient for our regular passengers.”

Also Amtrak: “This Hiawatha is stopping at Joliet after Milwaukee, duh”

Snow really reveals which parts of our transportation infrastructure are actually useful.
December 1, 2025 at 11:51 AM
For example, there’s a bunch of 50 mph zones along this stretch of the Piedmont west of Durham. It probably wouldn’t cost too much to upgrade them to 79 mph, but would be a lot more expensive to upgrade the 79 mph sections to 90 mph

How does one differentiate between that situation (which seems similar to an American 4-way stop) and this one (which seems similar to an American major vs minor street, where I assume drivers don’t have to yield to cross traffic)
November 24, 2025 at 5:51 AM
Like, as an example of a random 4-way residential intersection (in Munich), I don’t see any traffic control signs. Is the expectation that, despite no signage, a driver should slow down and make sure the way is clear before continuing?

A story in 3 parts.

Hard to be on time when you leave the layover 3 min late
