This alarming trend of cost escalation is echoed throughout Canada, and the English-speaking world.

Meanwhile, in other developed nations, transit construction costs have stayed lockstep with the rate of inflation - a clear sign that project delivery practices are at fault.

I'm pulling for Ding Loren to win the World Chess Championship for one reason, he once quoted Camus

Missing Middle is consistently the best pod in my feed not just on the Housing Crisis, but policy and quality of life in Canada in general.
Great stuff in this episode in particular!
Latest episode of "Missing Middle".

Cara and I talk a lot about the problems of the housing crisis - today we're talking solutions! Specifically, the four pathways governments can use to create housing affordability for families.

New CMHC housing starts data. Starts in Ontario are collapsing, while they increase in most other provinces.

Rising development charges and increasing red tape at both the provincial and municipal levels is killing homebuilding in Ontario.

Good news! But importantly, Ontario lags behind and "will bring down the national figures".

Annual pace of housing starts in Canada up 8% in October, CMHC says
The national housing agency says the seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing starts was 240,761 units in October, up from 223,391 in September

There are 234,000 people in Ontario experiencing homelessness. That is enough people to be the 10th biggest city in Ontario just ahead of Windsor.

A huge policy failure decades in the making.

We simply did not build enough places for people to live. The strikingly low number of homes Canada has built in the past 40 years is undeniable when you consider completions per 100k people.

In Canada, housing completions peaked in 1974 when the population was under 23 million. There is now +40 million of us.

This is fundamental for understanding the housing crisis.
