The year ahead: We need balance, argues Minerals Council CEO Josie Vidal. We can’t produce things that no one can afford. Some of our native critters get way better treatment than some of our people.

It’s the most blunderful time of the year

Christmas is tricky and exhausting. New Year's is fraught. The world's most powerful people are insane. Read this post for a break from all that.

Et Voila.

My favourite 2025 games; most are discounted. A mix of genres. May you find a brief mental respite from The Horrors.

(Games are: Avowed, Ball X Pit, Battle Suit Aces, Citizen Sleeper 2, Clair Obscur, Eternal Strands, Hades 2, Monster Train 2, Octopath Traveler 0, Trails in the Sky: FC)

I’m going to play with my daughter then do a painting or play Baldur’s Gate 3 and go to bed early as an act of conscious rebellion against doomscrolling

it was one of the worst parts of Twitter & there was an impulse to not do it back in Bluesky Before Times but now if you tell people "actually this sucks" they'll tell you it's praxis to quote-dunk trash takes & that shitting up the timeline is Good, Actually and "exposes bigots to sunlight" or w/e
Love you all, but I don't know about this trend of quote posting garbage takes to dunk on them. It ends up giving the OP all the attention in the world—and yeah, a lot of it is negative but you know what they say about all publicity being good publicity. This is what sub(posts) were invented for 👀😂

This is the weirdest shit in the world, I can’t imagine anything less masculine than not being straightforward or refusing to look a threat in the eye out of some bizarre social cowardice

I cannot emphasize enough how good reviews provide your fave authors with both happiness and algorithmic favor.

Most people find new books via Amazon, and Amazon picks the books they want to show you (in part) from sales velocity and reviews.
"I can't afford to support my favorite author right now, I—"

Reviews.

Reviews are free AND they are a gift to authors that can keep on giving (i.e., exposure, marketing, algo boosts, etc.)

Please, give the gift of reviews to your authors this holiday season. It really can make a difference!

They need to introduce a new grade for papers like this one, call it a 'Jesus A' or some such. It's a pass, they keep their faith identity recognized and unchallenged, and everyone knows what it means.
If you’re wondering why your friends in academia are a little on edge right now, it’s because an eighteen-year-old who hasn’t done the reading, doesn’t look at the assignment, and has does no critical thinking skills more complex than “because I think it’s in the Bible” can literally end your career

The University of Oklahoma has removed an instructor who was accused by a student of religious discrimination over a failing grade on a psychology paper in which she cited the Bible and argued that promoting a “belief in multiple genders” was “demonic.” https://cnn.it/4b6g3rd

I feel like the only good move for creators who want to maintain audience trust (and retain the ability to make a living!) is no-AI promise or pledge
Yet another super talented artist swapping to making AI slop and it is truly demoralising every single time.

State of the NZ boardroom: utterly cooked. Boiled harder than a 1950s three veg dinner.
NZ Herald just printed and promoted an opinion column by Bruce Cotterill that is full of racist anti-immigrant rhetoric and blames the Green party for the Bondi shooting.
