I don't think many people appreciate the horror of growing up. Bones fuse together, harden, teeth erupt from gums only to be lost again and grow again!

Today's Antique Book Companion is The Case of Doctor Plemen as written by Rene De Pont-Jest, and published by Spencer Blackett in 1890. This is the third and final novel to feature the character William Dow, whose importance to the Detective Genre has been sadly overlooked.

How long has spicy meant sexy in the literary world? I'm not sure but it dates back to at least 1934 when Spicy Detective was first published!
Todays Vintage Magazine Companion is Spicy Detective Magazine from June of 1942 as published by Culture Publishing, owned and operated by Harry Donenfeld.

In a city that has forgotten sunlight, a government that has forgotten its people, and a population that swells into the raining skies, there can be little hope for those who’ve been wronged.

Todays Antique Book Companion is my 100+ year old, leather bound copy of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol as published by Little Leather Library. You might ask yourself, what does this have to do with Detective Fiction? It doesn't, however, it does have ghosts & supernatural elements, which I love.

Todays Vintage Magazine Companion is Pep Stories Vol. 10 № 1 as published by King Publishing in 1931. This is an early example of a girlie magazine. Although the publication is adult oriented, there were trends within its own popularity that saw to how it changed.

It's a pity more people don’t know about most of Poe's stories. I read his full collection of stories many times when I was younger. A lot of people don’t know he wrote sci-fi, satire, that really weird one about the drunk guy hallucinating a keg man...
Although he is mostly known today for his gothic horror and poems, he also wrote many adventure stories, and started the detective genre before the word detective even existed. Without him, our media landscape for the past 176 years would look very different.

Todays Antique Book Companion is The Eye of Gold by Inspector Stark as published by Street & Smith in 1905. This was an early book in my collection, and highlighted to me just how ephemeral books are and the characters within.

Todays Antique Book Companion is my copy of The Raven and other Poems by Edgar Allen Poe as published by Little Leather Library in the late 1910s. Today is also the anniversary of the remarkable authors death in 1849.

Todays Antique Book Companion is Denver Doll's Device by Edward Lytton Wheeler, as published by The Arthur Westbrook Co. in ??? Although the mystery of its unknown publishing date is fascinating, my attention will be on the lead character HERSELF.

Todays Vintage Magazine Companion is Official Detective Stories Vol 34 № 4, from April 1965. This magazine started in 1934 and ran until 1995! It was a mix of True Crime and fictional stories which included reenactment photos. It even inspired a TV show that ran from 1957 to 1958.

Since I mention the character fairly frequently, Todays Antique Book Companion is a copy of A Scandal in Bohemia by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as published by the Little Leather Library in probably the late 1910's to early 1920s.

Todays Antique Book Companion is №13 Rue Merlot by René de Pont-Jest as published by Lee & Shepard Publishers in 1880. In the french wikipedia article on the author, the lead character William Dow is possibly the first scientifically minded detective in literature.

Meow 🐈 Todays Antique Book Companion is A Mystery of One Night by Old Sleuth as published by J. S. Ogilvie Publishing Co. You might not realize it by looking at this incredibly cheaply made novella that it was written by someone who was hugely impactful to the genre.

Todays Antique Book Companion is Woman Against Woman by M. E. Holmes as published by The Eastern Book Printing Company in October of 1894. This is a murder mystery mixed with romance that has a poor woman lead character vs a noble woman.

Today's Antique Book Companion is a copy of the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, written by Stevenson as published by the Little Leather Library. It was originally released in 1886, about a year before the first story of Sherlock Holmes would be released.

Todays Antique Book Companion is 1906's The Woman of Steel by Nicholas Carter (a pseudonym used by several) in Street & Smith's New Magnet Library, to differentiate it from thier long running Magnet Detective Library imprint. The difference?

Todays Antique Book Companion is 1898's The Society Detective by Oscar Maitland as published by the most prolific publisher of detective fiction, Street & Smith. And, presumably, owned at one point in the 127 years by Mrs Royce. (Its the biggest thrill to me to find a name written inside).
