It is the tale of a spurned lover, who haunts the man after her death. However, out on the streets of the city he sees her old rickshaw and her ghost residing in it. It leads to his madness, his life falling apart, and joining her once more.

All the while older people dismiss you or reminisce fondly of when they too were subjected to the same horrors.
This is what inspired me to write "In the Dread of Night," for the Life of a Clever Doll Trilogy.
Just because it's natural doesn't take away the how unsettling it really is.

Then you're stretched out, your flesh strains, your joints pop & crack, and all the while it tries to adapt to an onslaught of chemicals to warp and twist you some more.
Some will bleed while others grow beards.
Concepts, thoughts, & desires all fill your head without being able to articulate them.

Since Edgar Allan Poe & Pont-Jest lived during the same time, Pont-Jest would have been roughly twelve years old when the first Detective Story, The Murders at Rue Morgue, was published. Pont-Jest would write and publish in other genre up until 1901, and he passed three years later at the age of 74.

The character's expertise in forensics and scientific approach to solving crime predates that of Sherlock Holmes by 10 years, but it was Conan Doyle who popularized the approach.
