Are we getting more #PsychSciSky users?! I’m Claire-4th year PhD student asking questions like “why do eating disorders persist?” I’m curious about how symptoms unfold over micro-moments & how to use that information to learn about long-term trajectories of illness maintenance, relapse, & recovery.

It felt sleepy on campus, and then I learned/remembered that it is fall break. Seems on brand for 5th year where semesters are almost meaningless with little anchoring me to time 🥲

In April, I thought it would be fun to celebrate internship apps with an 80k race in the PNW. I’m now looking at the cut-off times and my recent performances. I’m not saying I regret my decisions, but I am questioning them 🤡 2 weeks until a nice day along the Rogue River for however long!

Ok I know I’ve said this for years, but for real this time: I’m at the point of my training where I think “yay, I’m almost done, and oh no, I’m running out of time.” Maybe internship apps and dissertation writing make it hit a bit differently now. A mix of excitement, anxiety, & anticipatory grief!

I once heard someone describe their teaching as a “place for learning, not already knowing.” It isn’t a 1:1 here but I think of that sentiment in these OS discussions. Not that knowing results in doing but how do we create a space that’s inviting to adopt the values of OS and practice the principles

True. I really appreciate y’all’s input because I think these types of comments bring people in versus further isolate/push people away. It’s okay to not know things, *and* it’s important we learn, continue to learn, and raise our standards!

Grad school doesn’t have to be that hard all of the time! Over the past week, I got to see views like these and friends get married! I also saw pika, seals, otters, alpacas, and orcas✨

This change limits eligibility to the pool of students with the *least* access to information about GRFP, and will favor the lucky few with access to mentorship and social capital as an undergrad

7/ We found preliminary evidence that subgroup membership may be helpful in understanding treatment outcomes. Future work is needed to (a) clarify the relationships between shame/guilt in eating disorder samples, and (b) test if personalizing based on subgroup membership relates to clinical outcomes
claireecusack.bsky.social
6/ This finding is consistent with other work showing evidence for shame being implicated in eating disorder maintenance. It’s possible that guilt predicting shame reflects the tendency to internalize guilt or core-beliefs (e.g., I am a bad person) that can be difficult to move in therapy.
claireecusack.bsky.social
5/ Subgroup membership was not associated with change in eating disorder symptom severity, but was associated with change in eating disorder clinical impairment. Specifically, the subgroup characterized by guilt➡️shame showed less improvement in clinical impairment relative to the other subgroups.
claireecusack.bsky.social
4/ S-GIMME identified 3 subgroups. The subgroups were distinguished by the shame-guilt relationships, such that in one group guilt predicted shame; another shame predicted guilt; and the third group showed no relation between guilt and shame.
claireecusack.bsky.social
3/ we studied relations btwn GIMME-identified subgroups & treatment outcomes in individuals w/ eating disorders. If a subgroup membership predicts poor outcomes, that might point to a sticky area to target. If a subgroup is related to better outcomes, that could be a strength to leverage in therapy
claireecusack.bsky.social
2/ Eating disorder treatment effects have remained stagnant over the past 30 yrs, possibly b/c manualized treatments are based on aggregate information. While personalized treatments reduce symptoms, they may not be scalable. Here, we try to find the middle ground between the two approaches

Two new preprints on multilevel HMMs! Time series data is now pervasive in psychology and new methods are needed to model the dynamics in such data. Hidden Markov Models (HHMs) are powerful models for dynamics in which a system is switching between a number of discrete states.
