How has paperwork served as a tool of empowerment for people who often find power elusive?

In our latest podcast, a group of historians, archivists, and activists met at the Raphael Samuel History Centre (@rshc.bsky.social) to discuss the hidden history of paperwork 🗃️🎙️
Changing The Record

Making archival boxes:
Human🤝Machine

If you don't fancy watching a box being made for 90 seconds, I would look away now.

Our conservation team, and their big scary machine, make around 2000 boxes every year. They can be made to almost any size and dimension, and can be completely customised.

And also that to be autistic is to be a tragedy, a burden on society, a problem that must be solved. This is deeply dangerous stuff.

Whether they're blaming vaccines and Tylenol, or selling dubious "remedies," what they're really doing is promoting the perception that families (and especially mothers) can prevent and treat Autism. And thus also the perception that people with Autism and their families don't need social support.

And to say once again: Maureen is co-responsible for the existence of both PLR & ALCS, so every writer in the UK & Ireland should give her 💐💐💐. And read her books!

This is, I believe, the first official word from the Government on what happened yesterday in London. Not only inaction in the face of violence and hate, but a celebration of it. I passed through London twice yesterday with my two kids & what Labour seem to be missing is that people aren't just...

I’d add: again, it is not the public who have decided they want mass deportation, or that this should be an acceptable idea within the mainstream. It is our horrifying political/media class, who have roasted each other’s brains on social media. It is *elite radicalisation*, not popular politics.

Just in case people are unclear, putting 'hundreds of thousands' of human beings into camps is fucking evil. Are we all clear on that? You know when we talk about those lines before which we shouldn't draw parallels, this is one of those lines. This is evil, Farage is a fascist. These truths matter.

The Times editorial line: "sieve" the entire population so we can put 100s of thousands of people into camps.

"Removing a city’s worth of people would be an extended exercise. Identity cards would be a must if the population was to be sieved into legitimate and illegitimate camps"

Just for perspective, a few weeks ago roughly 100,000 turned up for the London Trans+ Pride march. By contrast fewer than 3,000 ACROSS THE WHOLE COUNTRY, have turned up to anti-asylum "protests". Yet we are meant to take the latter as "the voice of the people" and the former as "the minority".

This is a great read and critical autopsy of the V&A East Storehouse. To this can be added the devaluing of expertise that makes documentation possible. Salaries are shocking at both the V&A and BM, and neither seem very interested in investing in staff as opposed to shiny new buildings…

I grew up as a person of colour in Kent, surrounded by people who were v.keen to express views to me that would now make them Reform voters. "Your sort shouldn't be here", "F**k off back to P*kiland". Things of that nature.

But its always the poor far right voters who are the victims, isnt it?
igmansfield.bsky.social
It's got to the stage where if 'you don't know anyone whose voting for Reform' you need to broaden your social circle.

Or, perhaps, reflect on what it is about your behaviour that means your friends don't feel able to be open with you about politics.

Unfortunately a lot of the material relating to lighthouses was lost when Trinity House was bombed in WW2 but we still have some fantastic material in the TH archives at TLA. The keepers lived in extraordinary conditions.
