At a time when politics feels bleak and frustrating, I wrote a book on empathy and politics to inject much needed hope into the conversation and offer some ideas for change.

I love the idea of well-being as a guide for shaping what matters in societies. It puts people not profit or GDP at the centre of national metrics and highlights issues like health, security, cohesion, and sustainability as determinants of resilient societies.

Healthy, safe and getting along with each other: Australia attempts to look beyond GDP to measure what matters
The Measuring What Matters wellbeing report shows increased concern over security and access to healthcare and a stalling in Australia’s emissions reduction

‘War is not a specialist hobby for people in uniform, nor a moral test we can pass and move on. It is a set of choices we all share responsibility for – choices that are as much about who we are as a nation as they are about the technical details.’ -Andrew Carr

Military revision
By not wanting to be seen to be prioritising defence planning and budgets, the left has ceded strategic policy to the right, to the nation’s detriment

‘Both leaders need to learn from the past: racism does not diminish through rising GDP but through the willingness of politicians to argue against it’

Politicians need to articulate standards and boundaries for politics, and we need a clearer vision of the benefits of diverse, pluralistic societies

One month until my book on ‘Empathy in Politics and Leadership’ hits the shelves in the U.K.📚

At a time of divisions and growing tensions it offers a pragmatic and hopeful vision for how we can create better politics.

As PNG marks 50 years of independence this week, it will sign a significant treaty with Australia today, that will see the two countries integrate their militaries. It builds on broader cooperation initiatives between the two, and will offer pathways to citizenship.

'Totally integrated': Australia to join military forces with PNG
Australia is set to "totally integrate" its military with Papua New Guinea's forces, PNG's defence minister has said, as the two countries prepare to sign a landmark treaty.

‘Character is not a “nice to have”; it is a core driver of personal and business success.’

Edward Brooks, of the Oxford Programme for Global Leadership @ox.ac.uk writes in the @financialtimes.com on why virtues are as important as vision and skills for today’s leaders

I think positive stories, hope and ideas for changes are so important at the moment so do check out this upcoming book Empathy in Politics and Leadership. Hopefully lots of people will read it and learn as it's great to work with leaders who show empathy

In today’s @smh discussing perhaps the most important issue within the Australia-US Alliance 👇

Do we have the same expectations on roles & responsibilities? What does this mean for Australian defence strategy & force design?
