Of course, I haven’t actually done it formally since 9th grade, but it was *so* satisfying. I did do a semester of formal logic for my philosophy degree though.

His high school is the artsy one in the district with the IB program, and the university is right down the street. When he runs out of math at the HS, he can dual enroll there, although it’s a scheduling nightmare. (And fraught socially/emotionally, but I’ll cross that bridge when necessar)

He struggles with flexibility in problem solving, as in he comes up with a way he thinks will work and then bulldozes to a solution even if abandoning one path and trying another would be much easier/better!

This is of interest to me because my youngest also went to Nationals, and I’m trying to keep him from burying himself in only math and coding though high school!

but not so much about how those discoveries fit into the broader social context and how they shifted social structures going forward.

oh my GOD. I am melted.

The university is just down the street, so then it's just a scheduling issue for keeping him engaged that way, but doesn't really fix the "I just want to Math & Code all day" issue!
February 10, 2026 at 8:51 PM
He's a challenging case because of how advanced he on the math/STEM side and how young and socially immature he is on the "learning how to human" side. He's going to run out of high school level math, but getting to do hard math is what keeps him interested and willing to do other things!
February 10, 2026 at 8:50 PM
This is why I leaned on my high school freshman who just wants to do math and write code all day to take AP English Seminar next year. He needs to learn how to write somewhere!
February 10, 2026 at 8:19 PM
127 credits for a CE bachelors! And yeah, the only way he's getting it done in 4 years is because he came in with Calc I and Physics AP credit. The kids who come in for engineering and still need Precalc because their rural high school had shit math? They get to pay for an extra semester or two.
February 10, 2026 at 8:17 PM
My sophomore computer engineering kid took two liberal arts classes last semester and he won't take another till his senior year, and it's "ethics" but actually just professional ethics, so important, but not really humanities.
February 10, 2026 at 8:15 PM
And it sucks that engineering degrees are *so* credit heavy that even the “liberal arts” core classes are venn-diagrammed to be “engineering-focused” so the kids can still graduate in 4 years.

Having to get a little imperious with my nerd children as they select high school classes: “You will take humanities electives, even if they’re not as interesting to you as another science elective!”

if you look at our wiki (linked at whistlegoblins.fun) some of us maintain lists of ”whistles we like” at all the major sites. ACStudio’s is a makerworld exclusive, but I can guarantee there will be one you like at all of the other sites too!
