"it's the misogyny, stupid" feels wholly inadequate, and yet... If we are unwilling to confront the ways in which our society is organized around patriarchy (and yes white supremacy, et al), there's no whackamole of individual bad actors, even this prolific, that will yield the society we deserve. /

I understand that we all want some big unifying theory of how this kind of horrific abuse, especially of children, could go on for so long with so many people and I think that desire makes it hard for us to look at how these permission structures occur in other contexts (8/9)

Because they all care/cared about the same things- fame, wealth, power, influence, and the disgusting thrill of knowing that they are untouchable and can ruin the lives of girls and women that they see as less than them (7/9)

He didn't need to have dirt on all these men (and some women) or be working for some agency or government. They actually all could just be in the same circles of money, influence, and power and provide each other the permission structure for abuse. (6/9)

And I need us to realize that while men with all kinds of levels of power have done this kind of harm, it's actually insulating to amass this kind of power and influence. Trump was not wrong when he said "they let you do it." (5/9)

And I think about how all of us are watching and listening to this round of excuses and dismissals and having to relive our trauma and also our healing because we have had to actually reclaim our reality from this society over and over (4/9)

And I think about all of the girls we have heard through the grapevine may have also been harmed by him. And I think about the good friend we've met through this journey who survived similar in a nearby town. And I think about surviving, myself, over 35 years ago (3/9)

I have been thinking about my dear friend that bravely came forward over 2 years ago in my city about a former well known school principal turned now retired school committee member that groomed and raped her beginning at age 9. And how the then Mayor and others here publicly defended HIM (2/9)
