Congrats to new PhD Silvia Cerasaro, who last week defended her thesis at the Dept. of Mathematics, Tor Vergata (Rome)! She showed how history of math can support math teaching in primary school. Fibonacci on fractions was her case study. I advised her on the medieval side of the project.

Time to show this gem some love!

And I'll be giving a (two-fold) talk at the CHPS on Friday, to present my new book and a bit of my current research project. It's hybrid, so if you want to join, drop a line to @grazianaciola.bsky.social

I’m visiting the Center for the History of Philosophy and Science at Radboud University. Very excited to get to know people that are the authors of some of my favorite studies!

Do you need help with medieval Latin? I offer language teaching *and* research assistance, so if you just want a quick answer – e.g. a transcription or translation, or a manuscript identification – I can do that too. Further details here: latin.brunellus.com #medievalLatin #medievalSky

After all, like Federspiel said in one of his articles
« la droite euclidienne est devenue, en tant que droite, un être mathématique au contenu intuitif extrêmement pauvre, pour ne pas dire nul – aussi nul, peut-être, que celui du schmilblic hilbertien ».

And it wouldn’t’ surprise me if no particular thinker before modernity felt the need to emend this definition in this direction. 🤷‍♀️
cleliacrialesi.bsky.social
But again, your 1st option sounds safe enough to me, for it doesn’t seem that since Euclid, the definition of the straight line has included specific references to features like non-bent, non-angled, etc.
cleliacrialesi.bsky.social
But I can’t claim to know all the instances and shades of 'straight', neither in geometry nor in other fields.
cleliacrialesi.bsky.social
Sorry for the delay, I wanted to take some time to think about it. If I had to choose, I'd go with the first option (the intrinsic or positive one, as you put it), at least when 'straight' applies to a geometric entity like the line.
