With this reference you can quickly determine which notes are in & out of key, but of course, notes outside of the key (accidentals) are often added for flavor- keep this in mind when playing along with music.

All you really have to remember is:
Flat order: BEADGCF
Sharp order: FCGDAEB

Ex: if there’s an E flat but no A flat, you’re likely in the key of B flat (2 flats only, B & E). If there’s an F, C & G sharp, but no D sharp, you’re in the key of A (3 sharps). All other notes are natural.

This might be the highest quality version that still preserves some of that original jazzy charm

Btw, was struggling to find this earlier but just found it again. This recording from the 1951 film is also great. Haven’t seen it in full on any release of the film soundtrack until I came across this (apparently Japanese) release:

I wonder if any of the Parisian taxi horns from the time still exist & function. I would be seated front & center for a live version today, but sadly I think we’re in the minority here when it comes to demand

IMO, this broadway version has been the only contemporary interpretation of Gershwin I’ve heard that comes close to the original jazz band vibe youtu.be/S4CXZJFxvSw?...

I blame Leonard Bernstein. Most popular recorded version & it’s so stuffy. His version of An American in Paris drives me crazy. There’s a nice little sforzando at the end that I’m not sure is in the sheet music but is very clear in the 1920s recording. Haven’t heard it in any other recording

I do like the way Gershwin originally played it too. He flies thru it compared to anyone else’s interpretation. Wish I could hear someone play it like that today

How is he pronouncing it
