This time last week, firefighters were up against catastrophic fire conditions in Longwood, VIC.

The Longwood fire has so far burnt 130,000 hectares, an area 1.6X the size of Canberra. As of 15 January, authorities say 173 homes have been destroyed with another 12 significantly damaged.

Every Australian in every city, suburb and town is already paying a price today for worsening fire conditions driven by climate pollution.

Surviving and recovering from fires has cost us billions since 2009, and insurance premiums have jumped as high as 138% since 2020 in bushfire danger zones.

This is what climate whiplash looks like.

Our hearts go out to all those impacted by these extreme weather events. We must urgently cut climate pollution to ensure a safer future for vulnerable communities and generations to come.

These record-breaking temperatures underscore a stark truth: Australia is feeling the heat - fuelled by climate pollution from coal, oil & gas - and it’s costing us today.

BREAKING NEWS: New data from Europe’s leading climate agency shows that 2025 is among the top 3 hottest years ever recorded 🥵🌡️

Anddddd! Australia also smashed records for the most renewable power ever generated in our main energy grid, setting new highs for both wind and solar, and then broke those records again the very next day.

“Extreme heat is already deadly. Fossil fuels are making it worse. And we can change course if we choose to."

We’re thinking of all those affected by the fires, and the brave emergency services responders who are doing all they can to keep us safer ❤️

Thank you to Chloe from Somerset Farm for sharing her story.

Please stay alert and follow the directions of your local emergency services.

Right now, there are a number of fire districts across southern Australia facing catastrophic fire danger ratings.

Here's a breakdown of what that actually means – and if you're in a danger zone, be sure to stay informed through your local ABC radio station and your state-based emergency service.

It’s a no from us: under Donald Trump, the US has become the only country in the world to withdraw from a key UN climate treaty 👎

The good news? One president can’t derail global climate action. The worldwide shift to clean energy is accelerating – and Trump can’t stop it ☀️💪🌏

Former fire chief Greg Mullins explains what made the LA fires so dangerous, and what we must do here in Australia to better protect ourselves from a similar catastrophe.

This week, millions of Australians will swelter through the most severe heatwave in years.

We know climate change is driving hotter, longer, more frequent and more deadly heatwaves - here's how.

One year since the devastating LA fires, what have we learned?

How did climate change play a role, and what lessons should we apply here in Australia?

“If you live in suburbia and think bushfires don’t concern you, think again. Nearly every Australian capital city has a dangerous mix of preconditions for a catastrophic fire like LA," says Greg Mullins AO AFSM, Former Commissioner Fire & Rescue NSW, Founder of Emergency Leaders for Climate Action.

On the outskirts of many of our cities, the same dangerous traits exist for a catastrophic urban fire like what we saw in LA:
🔥 severe winds
🔥 extreme dry periods
🔥 steep slopes
🔥 bushland near homes
🔥 a history of destructive fires

Lots of things can spark a bushfire, including people. But climate pollution decides what happens next.

Drought, heat, relative low humidity, strong winds & high fuel loads are all being turbocharged by climate pollution. That’s why today’s bushfires spread faster, burn hotter & are harder to stop.

MAJOR 2025 CLIMATE WINS: South Korea, one of Australia’s biggest coal customers, pledged to close all coal-fired power plants by 2040, signalling a major shift toward clean energy.

This move highlights the opportunity for Australia to accelerate renewable progress!

MAJOR 2025 CLIMATE WIN: Coming into effect on 1 Jan '26, regulations require new Sydney residential buildings to go all-electric, cutting reliance on gas for a healthier, more efficient future.

The move will help Aussies save on energy bills while reducing climate pollution from fossil fuels.

MAJOR 2025 CLIMATE WIN: Despite its claim as the world’s top climate polluter, China is set to exceed its 2035 climate goals!

The country aims to cut climate pollution by 7-10% by expanding renewables, promoting electric vehicles, and achieving overall greenhouse gas reductions.

In 2025, global renewable energy generation surpassed coal, for the first time in history!

Solar, wind & hydro continue to surge, driven by plunging costs, rapid deployment & strong public support.

This marks a major turning point; coal is losing ground as renewable energy becomes the new default.
December 28, 2025 at 5:54 AM
MAJOR 2025 CLIMATE WIN: From 1 July, suppliers and manufacturers were required to meet emissions targets under the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard for new cars sold in Australia.

This is helping Aussies save money on fuel while reducing transport-related climate pollution.

Did you know that here in Australia, our main energy grid is already powered by more than 40% renewable energy?

More wind and solar power backed by storage is the fastest way to bring down power bills, and the only way to secure a safer future for our kids and communities.

So let’s keep at it! 💚💚💚
