It's a good thing I'm here to correct this misunderstanding.

In the last 40 years, it is 6.7 days per year.

That was an east side and Hillside event. Southeast (chinook) winds are never that strong at the airport. That event had a peak wind at the airport of 59 mph.

It's a safe bet that if any station in town recorded 100 mph, that would be the headline. At Anchorage Intl, I cannot find anything over 75 mph.
December 15, 2025 at 2:47 PM
At the airport, 71 mph was the peak in the March 2003 event.

The KCYS record is 89 mph. This would rank in the top 40 for them. @brendonme.bsky.social

On March 3, 1989, they had a peak gust of 75 mph also.

De-ope your account.

I don't understand you.

Meanwhile, my wind on the east side went calm at 4:30 and I'm down 15F since then.

What if it was blowing snowing?
December 15, 2025 at 4:03 AM
Thank you. I stand corrected.

The flights that are diverting are all cargo flights.
December 15, 2025 at 2:47 AM
The wind was stronger in the Valley last week and just barely clipped west Anchorage at times. This event is FAR more substantial for Anchorage.
December 15, 2025 at 2:41 AM
These are diversions to Fairbanks.

No. They are basketball size chunks. The 30' tidal range keeps it chunky no matter how cold it gets.
