Man, what a blast it has been so far. And he GETS Tim Drake! That makes me astoundingly happy.

I think I confused myself: I interviewed Will about that book before it came out and was sent a b/w galley xeroxed from when they were in the WE Quarterly (?). Something in my brain was thinking the DHC one was a reprint.

It's a great volume. I love how you got this edition of it: Most I got my hands on was the reprint in the '90s or so.

We had a butter thief, Fiegenbaum, an orange cat who led us to getting a plastic butterdish that shuts tight. Many a glass dish fell victim to his urges. And room temp butter on Saltine crackers is actually really, really good.

If they don't, I sure will!

Jules Feiffer told me folks who bashed Great Comic Book Heroes were mostly upset he wrote it before they did. I look at bad reviews saying more about the reviewer than the work itself, because it wouldn't be a bad review if it was sincere and constructive.

We're old Goth kids. We just sell our kid on Krampus instead.

Of course! Close readings are HALF the fun. Don't sell yourself short: carpe diem the hell out of it!

You could even use historical texts/interviews/bios on publicity agents from the '40s as a resource. It could be a really fantastic and fun project.

I'm personally too loaded with work right now (working on a book on Don Newton and have other irons in the fire) to dig in, but I think you should absolutely dig in and write an article on this. Would you count anything from Before Watchmen? Or only Watchmen proper?
December 2, 2025 at 1:21 PM
My favorite part of Watchmen isn't the comics alone, but the supplemental news pieces. They don't bring this up in the Annotated Watchmen, do they? If not, this could make for a fantastic textual reading of the book. And this article is referring to that exact photo, yeah?

I wouldn't say "lazy": I just found after years of doing this that, nine times out of ten, it's just a creator meeting a deadline and not thinking too hard about it or working as he went (case in point: Larry Hama). Now, having said that, it IS Alan Moore we're talking about!
December 2, 2025 at 1:21 PM
That's a great question! Possible answers:
1) Alan Moore didn't think about it
2) Being married to her, Larry was assumed to share the photo that Sally received
3) This was a personal not a promotional photo, so Larry may NOT have set it up (if it were a promo, why not have the negatives provided

This cabinet of wanna-be tough guys from a Cannon action movie is the worst. I look forward to seeing how they hold up in prison.

AMAZING! During one of the solos, someone handed Beth a cigarette. She grabbed it, took a drag, and started singing again.
