I'm a bit of a mess
Minneapolis is refusing to pretend this is business as usual, is defending their neighbours, and is documenting the horrors that are happening.

Trump, Miller, Noem, and their thugs were counting on a population that would ignore the cruelty (and tbf, some of this is not new). MN proved them wrong

I'm not sure about NEVER gotten a shot, but probably something close to it. In studies up to 2022, the original 2-dose regime was found to be less than 20% effective against infection at 6 months, and even a booster was less than 30% effective 9 months later: jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Now that that glaring gap in my follows has become so obvious (and I can't believe it took me so long to see that such important voices were largely missing in my feed), who can recommend some people I should follow who provide an Indigenous perspective to the historiography at play?

2. The sleight of hand of Carney's speech, specifically over the fact that Canada has repeatedly done to Indigenous peoples what he says the "great powers" are now doing to the rest of the world. And no hints of reflection, much less change, in how Canada will engage Indigenous treaty partners

1.How grimly funny and poignant it is that there is a "treaty" between Denmark and the US (specifically on Greenland), which the US is treating in the same way Canada has shown its treaty partners (ie. None), showing we weren't just tacit supporters, but helped write this playbook, and

My skepticism regarding Carney’s speech is rooted in the observation that he’s failed to do the small things that would signal resolve to actually move away from the US, particularly expanding regulatory & statistical capacity. Instead, he’s actually doing the opposite. Is he going to reverse that?

One last thing: If Carney is so keen on building new international institutions, why is he cutting Global Affairs Canada, i.e., the Canadian experts best placed to help build these institutions? Words v actions.

I would love to see Carney put into action both his campaign and Davos proclamations. But his revolutionary rhetoric, to date, has been matched with domestic tinkering and a refusal to take necessary steps (especially expanding, not contracting, the public service) to follow through on his words.

Canadians would do well to consider that Carney's well-received Davos speech is an extension of his campaign rhetoric. And the past nine months have been marked by a growing awareness of the chasm between his campaign rhetoric and action when it comes to the US.

Darkly funny about this:

Carney himself calls out "largely avoided calling out the gaps between rhetoric and reality" in his speech. Why, then, is he (and his supporters) so unwilling to close such a gap between those in his own behaviour as PM?

Carney: "American hegemony in particular helped provide public goods, a stable financial system... this bargain no longer works. Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition... recently, great powers have begun using economic integration as a weapon. Tariffs as leverage ... "

No new military missions, no new boards, no new joint appearances.

Stick to our existing commitments, sure, but don't get drawn in to support, even implicitly, what the US is doing.

And send some troops to stand with Greenland, FFS! We'll REALLY need Europe to stand with us if worse comes to worse

It is genuinely depressing to realize that, for all the criticism leveled towards Chamberlain, most people today would have cheered for his choices.

I realize Carney can't cut all relationships with the US now, but he should at minimum stop giving the US any new diplomatic or military support.

The very premise of the international liberal order is that illiberal behavior has to come with costs. That could be sanctions, prosecution, military or clandestine action, isolation, etc.

America has become an illiberal actor and no other country has imposed any costs on it. That's bad.
