Trump is right on one thing.... Europe has cheated the US by not being able to defend itself.

These are very dangerous times for all of us. Trump wants and is close to obtaining dictatorial power in the US. Europeans beware and find the courage to create EU Mk2 with the UK and preferably without Hungary or the Czechs.

Morning Bluesky.

A draft Executive Order seen by the NYT suggests the US is about to abandon Africa, which would be a big win for Russia and China.

The drastic overhaul of the State Department would eliminate almost all African operations and close embassies and consulates.

Europe is facing a much bigger crisis than it is currently admitting. Trump's tariffs will force China to try to increase sales to Europe. That will destroy more jobs here. China is a foe. Sup with a very long spoon.

Yesterday's events left my head spinning even faster than before. This kind of disastrous incompetence means that mutterings this side of the pond about dementia are getting louder. No European government could survive this level of total failure.

My take on Mad Orange Man's obsessions - the World; Europe; and France. The only remaining question is the how deep will the slump be? Slump of some kind looks inevitable and the China/US spat could get very ugly indeed.

It doesn't look as though the US markets like the Trump "medicine" any more than their European and Asian counterparts. Getting rid of Truss in the UK was easy - her own party turfed her out. The Republicans in Congress are too terrifed of MOM to act. How long will that last now?
April 7, 2025 at 10:21 AM
Britain: Building on success abroad, Starmer initiates the inevitable political realignment by endorsing and enacting much closer integration with the EU. The Lib Dem voters will agree as will many thinking Tories. The rest will move to a new Reform centred Hard Right. Badenoch is useless.
April 6, 2025 at 8:37 AM
Europe: 1) retaliates but with carefull targetted measures, not a blunderbuss; 2) re-thinks how it operates - Hungary et al cannot be the tail that wags the dog; 3) works out a new deal with the UK that both parties can claim undoes the damage of Brexit; 4) with the UK, can defend itself
April 6, 2025 at 8:30 AM
The US: 1) American Prices are going to rise; 2) Factories are not going to get built in the US - takes too long and Presidents change; 3) Retaliation is going to cost American jobs. 4) Every country on Planet Earth sees the US as hostile. Not bad for a day's work in the wreckers yard.

Mark Kelly: "This is not surprising. Here's a guy who told Americans to inject bleach into their bodies, who sent a mob to Capitol Hill. And now I think it's fair to say he stands out as singlehandedly destroying more wealth with his bad decisions than anybody else who has ever lived on this planet"

The poorest countries are the biggest victims of Trump's immoral madness. In Europe, France is the most vulnerable because of its own foolish profligacy:
