$Rosalind Franklin (1920–1958) was a British chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose work was crucial to uncovering the double-helix structure of DNA—the molecule that carries the genetic instructions for life. Despite her pivotal role, Franklin’s contributions went largely unrecognized during her lifetime. Educated at Cambridge and later working in Paris and London, Franklin became an expert in using X-ray diffraction to study molecular structures. While at King’s College London, she captured Photo 51, an X-ray image that revealed the helical shape of DNA. Without her permission, this image was shared with James Watson and Francis Crick, who used it to build their famous model of DNA in 1953. Though Watson, Crick, and Maurice Wilkins received the Nobel Prize in 1962, Franklin had died of ovarian cancer at just 37 and was not acknowledged at the time. Today, she is celebrated as a brilliant scientist whose meticulous work helped lay the foundation for modern genetics.$

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth abolished the 74-year-old Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS) this week over what he called a "divisive feminist agenda." The committee, which had survived through 13 presidential administrations and over seven decades of bipartisan military policy, had adapted its focus through conflicts from Korea to Afghanistan. It was summarily disbanded with Hegseth making the baseless assertion that it "hurts combat readiness" -- a claim unsupported by any evidence and refuted by decades of measurable military improvements.

I received this letter from #SenJeffMerkley in response to my concerns about #ICE. Some of this is information I didn’t know. 😳 (See ALT TEXT for the most relevant parts of the letter.)

Letter from Sen. Jeff Merkley, most important text:

In late 2024, ICE awarded a $2 million contract to Paragon Solutions, an Israeli-founded commercial spyware company that operates a software program called Graphite. Shortly after the award announcement, the Biden administration paused this contract to determine if the software complied with a previous Executive Order (EO) that restricts the government’s use of spyware. On August 30, 2025, the Trump administration reactivated the Graphite contract.

Graphite has the capability to hack a phone and obtain sensitive information such as all messages, photographs, and location data, including from encrypted applications, without a trace. The Biden administration blacklisted Paragon’s major competitor to prevent federal agencies from using technology similar to Graphite because of concerns about protecting the private information of Americans. Please know that I will closely monitor the development and use of this surveillance technology.

I am also concerned about ICE's use of Mobile Fortify, a facial recognition technology that can retrieve large amounts of personally identifiable information just by pointing a phone’s camera at an individual’s face. Facial recognition is often biased and inaccurate, especially against communities of color. Oregonians have been outraged and speaking out in high volumes opposing ICE using this surveillance technology, and I agree. That is why I joined my colleagues in a letter to ICE demanding that the agency immediately cease using Mobile Fortify.

ICE’s use of Graphite and Mobile Fortify is an alarming escalation in this Administration's efforts to intensely surveil people in this country. Please know I will continue to fight against policies and practices that threaten our fundamental privacy rights.

Almost half of the people arrested by ICE have no criminal record.
