“Drunk men frightened her. Coiled just below a surface of good humor lay their strength and their meanness, two guns waiting to go off.”

Can someone please tell the subtitlers that in Georgia it’s spelled “Dawgs”?

I don’t care what she’s telling me not to do, one look at Sheriff Bilal and I know she’s right. I don’t want that smoke.

“You think you love her, but I love her different. I always have… I love them all differently than you do. I love them with blood.”

I’m 1/3 of the way through this one and good god, if it isn’t one of the best novels I’ve started in a long while. So finely written, such full characters. One thing @keithrosson.bsky.social understands deeply: it doesn’t matter what horrors befall a character if you don’t first care about them.

“White folks went insane after the Old Man done his bit. They was scared out of their minds. I reckon in some fashion they ain’t been the same since.”

Finally was able to watch this tonight. As a devotee of Denis Johnson’s novella, it’d be easy to quibble with some of the alterations in the script. But in the end, I really only take issue with one. This is a gorgeously shot, incredibly well acted film about the epic in the ordinary. Well done.

“Them fellas was dangerous, but for the simple reason they had a cause. Ain’t no worse thing in the world than fronting up against one of those, for a man with a cause, right or wrong, has got plenty to prove and will make you suck sorrow if you get in the way of him wrongly.”

When the producers are really scared of the dancers being detained, you workshop a new tagline.

“All your crying don't do no good.
Come on up to the house.
Come down off the cross, we can use the wood.
You gotta come on up to the house.”
