Reminder! 👋 This weekend, track work will take place on the Blue, Orange, & Silver lines, closing Stadium-Armory and Potomac Av, with free shuttle buses replacing trains.

🟢 Trains will single track on the Green Line until 1 PM on Sun.

The RFK deal is done. The work to expand metro service to the stadium and coming neighborhood needs to have started yesterday. This morning WUSA 9’s Eric Flack and I walked the site to talk about how we get it done. Which begs the question: would you take metro to a game or concert?

It was a great space to discuss the current Week Without Driving challenge and the progress DC is making, from the increasing enforcement of dangerous drivers through the STEER Act and steps we’re taking to move closer to Vision Zero.

The Council’s Committee of the Whole is holding a hearing today on CM Allen’s bill aimed at freezing budgets during modernization so schools don’t lose the people who make them strong.
(2/2)
Graphic: Case in point: this past spring, families and teachers at Harriet Tubman Elementary School rightly worried about the $1.2 million cut facing their school because of this very issue.
Since enrollment always rises when a school returns, a school community shouldn’t lose its staff for a short-term change to the school. Graphic: The Council’s Committee of the Whole is holding a hearing today on Councilmember Allen’s bill to protect schools’ budgets during modernization.
The bill freezes a school’s budget where it is at the start of a modernization for the two years they’ll be in a swing space and until they move back into their new, improved home.
cmcharlesallen.bsky.social
A modernized school building should mean more opportunity for students, not fewer teachers and staff. But when families leave during construction, a school’s budget takes a hit, sometimes by millions.

(1/2)
Graphic: So, your child’s school is getting modernized! That’s great!
...But what if you come back to that beautiful new campus, and your school has lost the teachers and staff who made it special?
There’s a Council hearing today on a bill from Councilmember Allen to fix the issue. Graphic: When a school gets modernized, students “swing” to a different campus, with some parents choosing to enroll their kids elsewhere during construction.

But schools are funded based on enrollment. A temporary drop in enrollment means the school will lose teachers and specialists.
