The Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia is the largest salt desert in the world: an immense white expanse at an altitude of 3,600 meters that changes its appearance with the seasons.

In the rainy season, however, a very thin layer of water turns it into one of the most perfect natural mirrors on the planet.

In the photo we can see Andrei, our PhD student sampling snow at Concordia station to study microplastics and organic pollutants at this remote location. To make sure he doesn't contaminate the sample he's wearing extra large clean room robes over his cold weather gear.

The fifth and final drilling campaign of the Beyond EPICA – Oldest Ice project has just begun in Antarctica, at the remote field site of Little Dome C, 3,200 metres above sea level.
An international team of 15 will drill the bedrock beneath the Antarctic ice sheet and take duplicate ice samples.

A multidisciplinary team of researchers is on board the research vessel Kronprins Haakon to take part in the EXTREME25 expedition, led by the Arctic University of Norway (UiT). The objective is to explore extreme deep-sea environments.

Activities of the PNRA PACE project (Plankton Production and Carbon Flux in Antarctic Coastal Ecosystems) have officially begun in the extraordinary Terra Nova Bay (TNB) during the XLI Antarctic Expedition. Researchers begun ice-core and water- sampling.

The snow of Svalbard tells a climate story and is a true natural laboratory for studying how climate influences the seasonal chemistry of snow.

Two new studies by our colleagues have demonstrated that emerging pollutants — such as pharmaceuticals, personal-care products, and endocrine disruptors, reach the Arctic cryosphere via medium- to long-range atmospheric transport.

Today at the Svalbard Science Forum, Dr Elena Barbaro presented the PRIN ROSETTA project investigating the transport of chemical species on and into the snow pack during ROS (Rain on Snow events) in Ny Alesund Svalbard.

On board the NATO research vessel Alliance, researchers from CNR-ISP (Bologna) and technicians from OGS (Trieste) completed their mission in the Fram Strait — a key location for monitoring climate change in the Arctic.
