TLDR: school punished student for using AI; sounds like school was right in this case; AI is here and schools should teach and give students the opportunity to responsibly use AI.

Anyway, I have a lot more thoughts on this topic, but I’ll stop there for now

But I also think schools should, in some cases, encourage the use of AI. Students should be able to use and experiment with AI so they can learn the pros/cons about the technology. I’m not a fan of blanket non-use policies because that just doesn’t reflect the current world we live in

However, in the AI age, students will likely turn to AI in their work. If schools want students to use AI in a certain way, I think they need to clearly define how and when AI can be used.

There’s a lot of gray space in this area, so I think schools need to be very clear on what is acceptable

I’m not saying school bare all responsibility, particularly when students disregard instructions that clearly outline acceptable use of AI.

Just like in any academic discipline, I think there is benefit in students “learning the hard way” first through standard research and writing techniques

As this technology becomes more widely adopted, I think schools bare at least some responsibility on educating students on acceptable and responsible use of AI, just like they’ve done with other forms of technology in the past

It makes me wonder what teachers and school officials are thinking and doing about AI.

I remember as a student that, when computers were starting to become more widely used, we had to take computer and typing classes. I wonder if something like that for AI would be useful for students

All this to say, I think the original article, and the others I posted here, are interesting reads given the rapid expansion and demand for AI.

I’m always curious to see how the AI landscape continues to change

At the same time, given the huge adoption of AI by the general population, will things like this get more attention and demand?

I guess time will tell
OpenAI considers taking on Google with browser, the Information reports
ChatGPT-creator OpenAI has recently considered developing a web browser that would combine with its chatbot and separately discussed or struck deals to power search features, the Information reported on Thursday.

At the same time, I think we have obligations to consider the short and long term effects of massive AI adoption.

I was kind of shocked to see some of the numbers here and how much energy AI consumes
Data centers powering artificial intelligence could use more electricity than entire cities
The growing size of data centers is raising questions about power, land and the environment.

However, I absolutely agree that AI skills are becoming much more essential. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it included in job descriptions as a requirement for most software engineering roles soon
November 24, 2024 at 3:17 PM
Do I think that AI will completely replace software engineering jobs? I’m still a little skeptical. I think the article states what I think will happen (at least for a while): the AI can do some of the coding, but a human will still need to check and edit the code

I can definitely say it has drastically improved my efficiency in a number of tasks.

As models continue to get better, I can see how they will continue to get further ingrained in different professions, making human users much more efficient in their daily tasks.

Although I was initially skeptical of using AI, I have come to see how useful it can be and have adopted it across a number of things in my life, especially in software development
