#OnThisDay - 5 December 1967, #ScheregateSteps were re-opened after a major improvement scheme championed by @ColCivicSociety. The ‘Scheregate’ is the only surviving #Medieval gate in the #RomanWall and its name is derived from the #AngloSaxon word scaerd, which means ‘gap’.

Patches in the timbers show where holes from which muskets could be fired were cut during the 11 week long #SiegeOfColchester in 1648.

Just before the bus stop on the 'town' side of North Bridge are barriers, cones and signs blocking Middleborough announcing closure of the bus stop and that works are permitted works to start and finish on 11 November.

#OnThisDay - 30 November 1603 #WilliamGilberd died of the plague

Born at Tymperleys in Trinity Street, he is known as the father of electricity and magnetism.

He is commemorated in and believed by some to be buried in, #HolyTrinityChurch.

Congratulations if you recognised this as one of the wings of the 'Winged Victory' statue atop the Grade ll* listed #Colchester War Memorial. Built in 1923, it was sculpted by Henry Charles Fehr.

#OnThisDay - 28 November 1859, John Brown a stonemason working from premises on #Colchester's East Hill for 25 years and a noted naturalist died. He is buried in Stanway churchyard.

#OnThisDay - 26 November 1944, the Regal Theatre (later the #Odeon) on Crouch Street hosted a "Grand Musical Concert" featuring the Band of the #RoyalBerkshireRegiment.

The concert, under the patronage of the Mayor (AW Piper JP), was in aid of the 17th ITC Prisoner of War Fund.

We reported this seriously bent parking sign in Rosebery Avenue to the North Essex Parking Parternership (NEPP).

We're delighted that it's no longer bent and has been repositioned to reduce the likelihood of another vehicle strike.

#OnThisDay 22 November 1922, the "North Hill Mosaic" was uncovered while digging in his garden, by AW (Abraham William) Frost a Dentist who practised in Colchester for 52 years.

The #mosaic is today on display @ColMuseums in #ColchesterCastle
