In 1969, he was expelled from the Writers Union and by the time he was finally expelled from the Soviet Union in 1974 at which time he was presented with his 1970 award.

Solzhenitsyn was a vocal critic of the USSR and become an ardent Russian nationalist following the collapse of the USSR.
