LOLs reading this thread.
How delightfully quaint some of these old Devon village names are, their etymologies lost in the mists of time.

Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have a winner:
This article manages to name her husband before it names… her.

"Virtue signaling": a phrase invented by those who've smashed their own moral compasses and are pissed off that others' can still find north.

Just finished The Zoologist's Guide to the Galaxy, by Arik Kershenbaum.
Enjoyed it (though he makes some dinos remarks about language). But startled to find not a single mention of Jack Cohen.

Day out in #York yesterday. Intended to take a tour of #FairfaxHouse but it was closed. Had booked for the #VanGogh immersive experience: tech problems so they couldn't run until lunchtime, but I saw it eventually. In the meantime I took a tour of #York Minster

Delighted to find that the #YorkshireMuseum has part of the ruins of St Mary's Abbey in situ in it's downstairs exhibition space.

Hi, @gretchenmcc.bsky.social . I've been listening to Lingthusiasm 87.
When you talked about a fun etymology about trying to impose order and predict the future, I thought you were going to talk about "grammar" and "glamour".

I've just read Adversary, the fifth novel in Janet Edwards' Hive Mind series, which she published in e-book form last week.
It didn't disappoint.
Unusually for a new book in a series, I didn't go back and reread the rest of the series first, because I know them so well.
But I'm rereading Adversary.

Declining to back Braverman’s words but keeping her in office is Sunak hoping to secure the bigot vote while pretending he isn’t one.
Sorry no. If Braverman is your Home Secretary, you endorse her. Her hate speech is your hate speech. And you are responsible for the harm she does.
