On a wet and windy day I ventured up onto #PlaceFell because being a smaller hill, it was only just in the cloud. Around midday some sunlight managed to pierce the heavy clouds, creating a spotlit splash of intense colour that raced across #Patterdale

Minutes after being blasted by driving hail, the sun came out and illuminated the mountainside. It made the long 12 mile bike/walk trek from Glen Garry worthwhile, as I don't remember much about the forest track!

The eastern end of Lubbesthorpe Bridle Road with Abbey Farm in the distance. It is a cold winter day and the early cloud cover is beginning to clear. Farm vehicles have driven past and left tyre marks in the snow. There never was an abbey here, only a small chapel. It is the site of a deserted medieval village, house platforms of which can be seen in the form of small shadows on the left hand side.

What We Leave Behind.

The image is of a broken window looking out into an overgrown garden. Net curtains billow in the wind. Overturned furniture litters the room inside the house. Whilst in East Anglia a friend took me to an abandonned house. It was not simply derelict, the inhabitants had, some 20 years ago or so, just left and had left most of their possessions behind. In the intervening years it has been broken into, windows smashed, cupboards upended but all their possessions remain within what was their home. The atmosphere was incredibly moving.

Burrough Hill, an iron age hillfort, was once known as a sporting venue. J.B.Firth recalls that in 1921, Edward 'the Prince of Wales rode in a Point-to-Point on Borough Hill and lost out of his flying coat tails two favourite briar-pipes, his inseparable companions on his distant tours, which were publicly advertised for and duly recovered'. Just over a mile away to the southwest lies Burrough Court, where Edward first met Mrs Simpson in 1931.
