Hello new followers! We're Collection Ecologies 👋

We investigate histories of #collections to understand how collections can serve as archives + knowledge repositories in #envhist, & by reflecting on collections as ecologies themselves.

Check out our CHSTM seminar ⬇️ www.chstm.org/content/coll...

Already very happy about the accommodation because I get to walk past this gorgeous #ceramics art work by one of my favourite artists. Thanks @bshsnews.bsky.social 😍 #DuncanGrant #HistSTM
Painted ceramic tiles showing a naked young man with blond her reading the papers which cover the middle part of his body. He sits in front of a fountain on a meadow with flowers

Where does our food come from and is it safe? My article in the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Environmental Science explores the history of plant #genetics and concerns over #food in the BSE crisis and #GMO controversy: doi.org/10.1093/acre... #histSTM #envhist #aghist #EnvSci
Two dishes containing peanut plants. One has been badly damaged by insects. The other, genetically engineered, plant is still intact and green. Image is from the Agricultural Research Service. The cover of a Greenpeace pamphlet against GM crops. The text reads "Genetic Experiment, Don't Buy It." A large X is in the center of the image and the background is a field of yellow crops (most likely oilseed rape plants).

New paper re-up! It covers:
- how natural history & world cultures #museums can learn from each other.
- examples of questions natural history museums can ask when researching legacies of colonialism in their collections.
- a discussion about repatriation.
- environmental legacies of #colonialism 👇

New paper out today!
"The Entwined Human and Environmental Costs of the Colonial Project: Perspectives from Natural History Collections".
I explored a few themes on how natural history #museums are now working to understand their colonial legacies. A little🧵:
www.berghahnjournals.com/view/journal...
A screenshot of the title page and abstract of the paper. It reads:
The Entwined Human and Environmental Costs of the Colonial Project
Perspectives from Natural History Collections
Jack Ashby
■ ABSTRACT: Although such research has long been mainstream in world cultures collections, natural history museums have only recently begun tracing their colonial histories, seeking to identify individuals obscured by power imbalances, and inviting consideration of specimens as artifacts of invasion, exploitation, and extraction, as well as scientific data. This article summarizes these developments within natural history, providing possible approaches and questions. It illustrates how the costs of the colonial project experienced by people and environments were intertwined and follow similar historical processes. Equally, the vital roles natural history collections are playing in researching global environmental crises can also be played by world cultures collections.
By learning from each other’s disciplinary research practices, natural history and world cultures collections have huge potential to increase their social relevance.
