Publication Day! How was race taught to students during the Enlightenment? Our book traces how Edinburgh-trained students carried their education into colonial contexts and forged race as a central category of Enlightenment thought. #History #Enlightenment #Colonialism #YaleUniversityPress

1/6 Another highlight for our 10th anniversary. @brucealexb.bsky.social (Griffith University) who wrote "Travels in Space and Time: Progress, War, and the Historical Mobilities of Scotland’s Enlightenment" with us in 2022 (print 2023). We asked him about this work and its future. His response:

““They dragged little Greta [Thunberg] by her hair before our eyes, beat her, and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag. They did everything imaginable to her, as a warning to others,” the Turkish activist ErsinÇelik, a participant in the Sumud flotilla, told Anadolu news agency.”+

People say "autism never used to exist" and then you go to the Natural History Museum and the exhibit has a caption like "Born in 1762, The Revd [name] was famously irascible, steadfast in his routine, and dedicated his life to collecting 25,000 rare beetle specimens".

Fundamentally, the headbanging Right doesn't believe Autism (or ADHD) exists. Or in so far as it does exist, a human conspiracy has created it.

We're back to their core outlook that 'It didn't exist back in the good old days so can't exist now.'

'It must just be some modern woke Marxist nonsense'.

I’m having intro chats with dissertation students this fortnight, and one of them asked which historians I’d recommend for beautiful writing they could absorb to further develop their own writing style.

So, gang, which are your favourite *writers* among historians, any time, any topic, any place. 🗃️

I am so sorry to hear that - that's elitism and really uncalled for. Have you found another platform that works for you?
lindaaburnett.bsky.social
Due to Academia(.)edu licensing agreement, which permits the use of your likeness, voice, and publications in any manner they choose, I, like many others, have decided to leave the platform. You can now find my research on ResearchGate instead.

Our book, Race and the Scottish Enlightenment, now published, @lindaaburnett.bsky.social and I were challenged to the ‘Page 99 Test’.
The challenge, as defined by Ford Madox Ford, is whether the whole book can be seen in a single page.
Here’s our response.

PS Enjoy the conference! I unfortunately had to cancel my participation due to family reasons.

I completely agree. Thanks for interesting thread! I listened recently to a very interesting presentation on how Swedish and Norwegian businessmen collaborated in Siam in the nineteenth century (presentation at the Museum of Ethnography in relation to their collections).

If you're interested in Alexander Monro secundus and his son, they are featured in several chapters.

Thanks for your interest but our approach is broader than you suggest. We don't for example argue that all Edinburgh trained surgeons used the term. We uncover a range of concepts related to race, as well as opposition to race and racism. I would encourage you to read the book.

Publication alert! Jens's article explores how sheep became geopolitical assets in 18th-c Europe, as France sought to rival British and Spanish wool production. His article introduces "animal mercantilism" to show how animals were entangled in politics, economics, and ideas of race. #skystorians
