Yes so I think it is deeply encoded and by authority what we really mean is perceived certainty (vs uncertainty). And certainty seeking (- knowing, in a very broad sense) is fundamental to survival. So by ‘authority’ all we mean is certainty (also hence an academic ‘authority’).

The problem is that in order to effectively ‘withstand pressure’ you need something both trade and security oriented that’s much meatier than your typical alliance…and what’s the closest thing to that…?

Anyway my small thought here is if what we’ve seen over the last 20/25 years is an unwinding of multilateralism based pluralism in favour of hegemonic authoritarianism, I wonder if the latter is now peaking and we’re heading towards regionalism based pluralism.
