I've discovered some of my favourite authors purely from picking up a lovely-looking cover in the bookshop. Case in point, I'd never heard of José Saramago before finding this simple but alluring cover on a shelf, and ended up reading just about everything he wrote.

Book appreciation post. Finally finished this today, and like many of the Cambridge Companions it made reading Herodotus for the first time so much easier and informed for this non-historian. Only 20 pages of Herodotus to go... 🤞

Old men were more reliably terminal in those days. I'm reminded of Pope John Paul I, and my sister taking a look at the telly and saying well he's not got long. Which has now led me to this strange detail from his Wiki page: there was a Cardinal Sin!
