Economic data is a noisy group chat: jobs, GDP, income, prices all talking at once. Each message can mislead if you take it literally. The real task is finding the common story they’re telling together, not falling in love with one statistic.

No wonder that in Russia, certain people at the top in our present administration are referred to as "useful idiots".

No wonder!

So the president designates groups of unnamed and unknown people as “terrorists”, then the Secretary of Defense decides who fits under that extremely broad definition, then the US military kills them, and that’s all we are allowed to know.

Notice the pattern: help a narrow group loudly, hurt everyone else quietly. Tariffs help a few steel workers but raise prices for every firm using steel. Tax cuts favor the rich while squeezing social programs. Politically noisy wins, economically costly losses.

Like bad reality TV. Only worse.
TRUMP: Scott, India. Tell me about India. Why is India allowed to do that? They have to tariffs. Do they have an exemption on rice?

BESSENT: No sir. We're still working on their trade deal

TRUMP: They shouldn't be dumping. Give me the countries if you could. Mark it down, Scott.

When Mark Carney sets specific goals for Canada to "diversify away" from its reliance on the US—making headlines in Canada but not the US—hear that for what it is: Close partners and allies looking elsewhere for better friends.

When a politician says: we’ll deregulate health insurance and send you a “freedom account” check, ask: freedom to buy what? If insurers don’t offer real policies or can cherry-pick only healthy people, that money is a coupon for a store that’s not open.

A key point from this interview: the "benefit" of tariffs, if it exists, is delayed. You don't flip a switch and get a plant tomorrow. You wait years. It also follows that a tariff you don’t trust to outlast a mood swing won’t change where companies build at all.

Inflation isn’t all the same. When prices rise because demand is strong, firms earn more and can raise wages. With tariff-driven inflation, firms face higher costs, not higher revenues—so prices go up but paychecks don’t. Same pain, less gain.

A reminder: Tariffs are a regressive tax. The anti-Robin Hood.

Trump's current tariff settings effectively impose a tax rate on low-income households that's roughly TRIPLE that on high-income folks. That's not the way taxes are supposed to work.
