more and more they feel shit like the transphobia and the Doing Fuck All About ICE is inevitable, that dems won't move at all no matter what, so they go through a long rigamarole to construct something that makes this 'pragmatic' while redirecting their anger towards people who will actually respond

stuck in a set of contradictions partially to try and keep their own sense of self feel morally 'clean', partially to keep faith in some kind of system/leadership, made more and more brittle as they watch the party hardly budge an inch no matter how desperate things get. it mentally fries 'em.

and the same goes with trans issues. you can maybe get them to admit california shithead number one is bad on trans issues, but once you start poking at "so maybe he, y'know... is biased against trans people, doesn't see them as equally valuable?" gets 'em into rationalization and defensiveness

a whole lot of rhetoric and policies that actively attack the poor and the homeless, but somehow never motivated by any sort of personal dislike or even indifference towards lower classes. they can maybe admit gavin treats the poor like shit, but "so he dislikes the poor, right" gets 'em titchy

it flips around as needed, too. one minute going "okay yes they suck on trans rights BUT-" admitting to the problem, but if you really start prodding at it they'll flip to "actually they're VERY supportive of trans people", because the idea that their reps may be immoral/bigoted eats at them.

some will tell you "okay, yes, they suck on (x, y, z) - and we can and should pressure them" in various ways: how many of them sound like they're confident they can actually do that?

they've watched the party not budge for massive crisis after massive crisis and it is, bit by bit, itching at them.
