When you look at the fascist project, starting from Fox News' debut, it's all about the primacy of emotions over reality. Sure, crime is down, but it doesn't FEEL that way! If I'm not oppressed as a white man, then why am I still unhappy? I want a news channel that's about fear and anger, not facts!

The reason why KPop Demon Hunters is the most important film of 2025 is that it understands fascism to be fundamentally an *emotional*, rather than an intellectual or political, phenomenon. In this essay I shall

I often tell students that one of the major differences between modernity and pre-modernity is that pre-modernity regarded "innovation" as a very bad thing.

but Fra Angelico was someone special, his work is something special. Something transcendent in a way that neither late Gothic nor Renaissance painting really was.

I appreciate that calling KPop Demon Hunters the most important film of a year that also saw the release of The Accountant² is a bold claim

I’m actually being quite serious here. Fascism is about keeping people emotionally dysregulated, especially through the reinforcement of shame, and offering them relief through mass conformity. That’s why fascism is so opposed to empathy, authenticity and queerness

Next time I’m watching some utter garbage and someone asks me why, I’m going to say to them: “The poet must not avert their eyes.”
Ideally, he would be out on a shoot right now. Until then there are books. Herzog reads voraciously; he says that all the good directors do. It doesn't even have to be great literature. His friend, the documentary maker Errol Morris, recently recommended that he read a real piece of crap. "It was a bad book by a failed lion tamer. His arm was bitten off by a lion. He wrote with the other arm. And it's a wonderful book to read because you have to comb the content against the texture and it gives you fabulous insights into human nature. It is the same with trash movies, trash TV. WrestleMania. The Kardashians. I'm fascinated by it. So I don't say read Tolstoy and nothing else. Read everything. See everything. The poet must not avert his eyes."

Could someone please tell Starmer he can just say he thinks something is "wrong", he doesn't have to bring racist dogwhistles like "un-British" into it
PM tells students not to join 'un-British' protests today

Image of Keir Starmer

As we just mentioned, Prime Minister Keir Starmer is asking students not to join pro-Palestinian protests on the second anniversary of the 7 October attack today.

In an article on the Times published today, Starmer calls it "un-British" to hold protests on the anniversary which, he says, has been used by some as a "despicable excuse to attack British Jews".

"Today, on the anniversary of the atrocities of October 7, students are once again planning protests.

"This is not who we are as a country. It's un-British to have so little respect for others. And that's before some of them decide to start chanting hatred towards Jewish people all over again."

Honestly the bar for being declared “too big to fail” is just to give enough money to Trump. Under the current regime, “2B2F” will be based on corruption, not on systemic risk. (Note: I’m not saying OpenAI is engaging in corruption, I’m just saying they might want to consider it as an option 🤡)

Sam Altman is laying the groundwork for OpenAI to be declared too big to fail by the U.S. government. At this point the stock price of AMD, Nvidia and Oracle all have OpenAI growing revenue 20x by 2030 baked in.

It’s not a systemic risk but it isn’t nothing either

Discworld QOTD, from Jingo
‘This belonged to my great-granddad,’ he said. ‘He was in the scrap we had against Pseudopolis and my great-gran gave him this book of prayer for soldiers, ‘cos you need all the prayers you can get, believe you me, and he stuck it in the top pocket of his jerkin, ‘cos he couldn’t afford armour, and next day in battle - whoosh, this arrow came out of nowhere, wham, straight into this book and it went all the way through to the last page before stopping, look, you can see the hole.’
‘Pretty miraculous,’ Carrot agreed.
‘Yeah, it was, I s’pose,’ said the sergeant. He looked ruefully at the battered volume. ‘Shame about the other seventeen arrows, really.’ (J)

2/2 demonstrating (yet again) why a feminist analysis is absolutely essential to understanding our times. It is a real problem that much mainstream research extremism or the far-right completely (and willfully, in my view, given the brilliant research already out there) ignores this.
