#31DaysOfGraves "Occupation" Grave marker of William Ambrose Hulbert (1832-1882), one of the founders of baseball's National League. He was also president of the Chicago White Stockings team.

#31DaysOfGraves "Column" A column is nice, but 16 are even better. Grave of Palmer family. The two sarcophagi are for Potter Palmer (1826-1902) and his wife Bertha (1850-1918). Three generations of Palmer descendants are buried in the floor. Graceland Cemetery, Chicago.

#31DaysOfGraves "Tree" This grave in Rosehill Cemetery, Chicago, marks the resting place of George S. Bangs. While serving in the administration of Ulysses Grant, Mr. Bangs developed the railroad mail car. This achievement is memorialized in the base of the stone tree.

#31DaysOfGraves "Figure" This statue casually sits atop the gravestone of Dr. Christopher Manuel who died suddenly while riding his bicycle along the lakefront (presumed coronary failure). He was only 40 at his death. Graceland Cemetery, Chicago.

#31DaysOfGraves "Ornament" This Laredo Taft sculpture, called Eternal Silence, stands over the plot of Dexter Graves' family in Graceland Cemetery, Chicago. It is commonly referred to as the Statue of Death.

More Landscape: There is a small island in the lake at Graceland on which only one person (and family) is buried: Chicago architect and urban planner Daniel Burnham. This photo shows the bridge and the island.

#31DaysOfGraves Peter Schoenhofen (1827-1893) Graceland Cemetery, Chicago. It features the unlikely combination of an Egyptian pyramid structure, flanked by a sphinx on the right and a typical Victorian era angel on the left. Suggested that he may have been hedging his bet on the afterlife.

#31DaysofGraves Stanley Tigerman, Chicago architect. His dates of birth and death are inscribed on the gold cube, his name is on the south and west interior sides. People visiting the cemetery interact with this by moving the smooth stones at its base onto the walls and inside the sculpture.
