Ostensibly, both are reacting to critiques of foundationalism. But they also want to insulate themselves from the sexual and cultural pluralism emerging out of the 1960s and the bogey-man of postmodernism.

So both reformed epistemology and post-liberal theology emerge during the late 70s/early 80s. The influential figure for the former is Thomas Reid, the founder of what became known as Scottish Common Sense philosophy, while the latter makes use of Wittgenstein’s philosophy of language.

Not that there ever was serious or rigorous engagement with either philosophical tradition—as always, better to observe what a reactionary is doing with a concept/tradition rather than be distracted by simple engagement or utilization.

One thing that always amuses me when I see citations of Pentecostalism as being the fastest growing Xian movement of the late 20th century/early 21st century is how incredibly diverse regional expressions are, to the point that many of these groups don’t acknowledge the other’s legitimacy.
