“The girlfriend of one of the founders of antifa”
Christ Appearing to Mary Magdalene by John Graham-Gilbert

Good piece. On the question—“Which [theological] liberalism?” I’d put forth an (old) piece by Tamás, who wasn’t a theologian but identified a key principle from the Enlightenment which puts it at odds with with neo-fascism—the widest universalization possible of the rights and privileges of society.

A few years ago, I wrote a book on fascist tendencies in US white evangelicalism. It’s strange to look back now. At the time plenty of people told me I was blowing things out of proportion. Now I think I wasn’t harsh enough.

Watching someone who you considered a thoughtful person, and with whom you’ve even had an amicable relationship, become a foaming-at-the-mouth reactionary, publicly, is one of the most unsettling feelings.

Come for boring soc/dem politics, takes on a mediocre and dying field in philosophy, AND a terrible taste in music.

You will follow a bunch of people who have interesting politics, or are into the best philosophy, and then you find out their music taste and it just hangs around like a bad smell and sullies their whole image.

Very good—making sense of Xian language requires paying attention to where that language is positioned within adjacent constellations of commitments…”Then I remembered that slow and bitter revelation how in the interpretation, even in that ‘Jesus First’, the flag in fact became the guiding force.”

Several months ago, I learned that a friend I had met because of similar academic interests was planning to co-write a book with an aggressive and vocal bigot on X. When I asked, “Why publish with someone who constantly demeans other people that way?” the response was “Well, he’s always nice to me.”

"Common decency stigmatizes people that do not participate in it—removes them from voluntary association. We indeed have to live with one another, but terms and conditions apply."

Ezra Klein is wrong: shame is essential.

I mean, yes, drop “cure” but certain kinds of cognitive function are more conducive to the kind of development which yields greater attunement to all forms of language and communication, which many find desirable—isn’t that a worthy end, not apart from destigmatizing neurodivergence?

This is what Trump is offering to male voters. He won't actually improve anyone's material wellbeing, but he will end any checks on what harm they can do to their own family. Men will be materially worse off, but will have more power over women and children, and will perceive that as having more.

Trump minimizes domestic abuse during a talk at the Museum of the Bible: "Things that take place in the home, they call crime ... If a man has a little fight with the wife, they say this was a crime, see?"

Yes, “secular” is not a problem free concept but the Christo-fascists are pushing hard for a state enforced and punitive version of Xianity and “secular” is infinitely preferable to that.

If we want a democratic secular society the kids will have to understand something more about the pervasive god-talk that isn’t simply imbibed from the loudest and worst peddlers of faith.

Everyone should have to take something like “Abrahamic Religions” for a term before they graduate from high school taught by someone with a terminal degree in religious studies from a public university.
drempel.bsky.social
Just a note: “religious education” is not the same thing as religious indoctrination, and we would actually be a lot better off with more of the former in our schools.

The point would be to make sure they have some index of intelligibility apart from whatever personal faith for a culture (U.S.) that is absolutely inundated with misappropriated religious symbolism and language from this general tradition.

If you grew up in a conservative Xian environment you may have learned this long before you learned it in a wider political context.

It’s impossible to share values and principles with people who only care about their rhetorical use.

The core problem with liberals' efforts to prove that they believe in the same values conservatives do is that conservatives are lying about what values they believe in.

Don’t understand the backlash about the logo, they literally have “Cracker” in the name! Not very woke!

If it’s not obvious, this isn’t meant as a dunk or whatever on the OP—our world would be an incredibly different place if the majority of Xians in the West had this kind of posture towards people with non-majority identities and sexual orientations.

Not Catholic, but it’s precisely the matter of dignity which seems to me to preclude placing certain dimensions of human existence under the question mark, or at least to the extent that such questions would deny access to the widest benevolence of God available within an ecclesiastical structure...

And in the meantime, I can’t let the asking of questions be an excuse to do nothing. If you want to persecute a trans person, I don’t care if I’ve figured out a theological answer for what’s going on with all that, we are going to drop hands. They’re still a human and have dignity.
