The energy that is created by bio digestion is used locally not exported. The West has been slow to adopt that technology but it is common in third world countries. I visited a treatment plant in the early 60's that utilized a bio digester to provide enough energy to run the whole plant.

It's a problem with boat people who leave their dock to dump their black water in the intercoastal waterway rather than going out to sea and doing it there.

The dairy farms using bio digesters to provide their own needs plus selling the excess on the grid reduce loading on the grid, lessening the amount of energy needed for import. It's small, but can add-up if enough go that rout.

Ireland has plenty of biomethane that is an unused resource, just put collection tubes in cows rectums and send it to a compression station, then pipelines to people's homes.
