Hi lovely #AusEcol peeps! Early bird registration is now open for @ecolsocaus.bsky.social #ESA2025, to be held at the end of November on Kaurna Yerta, Adelaide! Very much looking forward to having you all in Rads for a week of ecology and nature conservation cleverness!

Great work, team! You’re going to have to do better “lots of bird species” to satiate us vicarious birders, though, Hugh.

Well that was epic, #ICCB2025 folks! Always energised by the intellect and passion and ideas of the conversation community. Thanks so much to all my beautiful friends, and to the organisers for making the week such an inspiring conference. See you in Mexico! @iccb2025.bsky.social

South Australia’s new Biodiversity Act will achieve things no federal or state law has done before. It shows states and territories can achieve ambitious reform.
As the federal government fumbles on nature law reform, the states are forging ahead

If @hugepossum.bsky.social is leading it Emily, he’ll guarantee that you see it (no pressure Hugh 🤣)

Appreciate the shout out @martinemaron.bsky.social but I really was only there for the pitta (and yes it was outrageous) 🤣 #ICCB2025 @iccb2025.bsky.social

Outrageous views of noisy pitta and buff-banded rails at the #ICCB2025 conference bird walk this morning - thanks @coorongdan.bsky.social for your excellent co-guiding!

Enter Enelyne Moli’s talk on wedge-tailed sheatwaters breeding in Vanuatu!

They used the traditional harvest done for wedgies on the island to randomly sample 70 birds for plastics in their guts.

And guess how many pieces of plastic total they found?!?

Good mate Ayesha Tulloch supporting her colleague Lin Dai at #ICCB2025, synthesising adaptation actions for threatened species on farms. Important, practical work, delivered with generosity @iccb2025.bsky.social

Another brilliant talk at #ICCB2025 by Margaret Fox in Marshall Islands fishery management. Interesting navigating interactions between global conservation aspirations (eg CBD) and local indigenous rights and obligations. @iccb2025.bsky.social

We are looking for a couple more experts to join our horizon scanning exercise online resulting in a paper in TREE. We are keen to have more participants especially outside Europe/North America. Please come and talk to me if at #ICCB2025

Day 2 #ICCB2025 opens with Melissa Hampton-Smith @jcuofficial.bsky.social talking to the inclusion of equity in global conservation policies/frameworks. Sone work to do, with Melissa presenting useful recommendations. Great talk, Melissa! @iccb2025.bsky.social

Would like to just add how impressed I am at the quality of the speed talks here. Complex ideas being presented with clarity and meaning, all in 3 minutes. Well done all! #ICCB2025 @iccb2025.bsky.social.

Michelle Ward talking to cost estimate models for the conservation and recovery of Australia’s threatened species. Really clever stuff for better understanding the impacts of investment in recovery. #ICCB2025 @iccb2025.bsky.social

I'm really excited to be in Brissy for #ICCB2025!

Come see me Tuesday during the poster session (Poster 61), where I'll detail some questions that can be asked with the recently published Seabird Restoration Database!

Could be a great PhD chapter for a PhD student.

@martinemaron.bsky.social squeezing How To Fix Offsets (paraphrasing) into 3 minutes. Exceptionally I might add. Key message for me was applying absolute, rather than net gain, the latter inevitably leading to more loss. Standing room only I might add! #ICCB2025 @iccb2025.bsky.social

Volunteers are crucial for conservation work but there is a risk of burnout amongst them. @angelasocsci.bsky.social & Tracy Schultz identified the factors associated with greater risk of volunteers leaving & give great recommendations to keep these wonderful people engaged!

Really interesting talk by Jesse McLaughlin @cuny.edu on shorebird flyway governance in the Americas. Focus on informal, non-binding and adaptive arrangements. Lessons to be learnt for other international agreements perhaps #ICCB2025 @iccb2025.bsky.social

Great talk by Jonathon Rutter @ox.ac.uk using acoustics to detect “hidden” seabird-fishery interactions. >60% of interactions not detected using existing GPS, suggestive of a greater impact from small-scale and illegal fishery activity. Great use of novel tech. #ICCB2025 @iccb2025.bsky.social
