The National Roads Authority (now TII) greatly streamlined the process for constructing motorways in particular. It used to be a fragmented mess, with lots of project splitting and gombeen opportunism.

Development of public transport infrastructure was not similarly improved, for political reasons.

Unfortunately, diesel engines "are here to stay", as Vaclav Smil puts it. 👇

At least until a definitive policy decision is made to terminate their use.

They are just too convenient, despite their wastefulness. And it's too easy to ignore their externalised cost.

A feature of the Irish "planning" system is the role of rhetoric & opinion in shaping ACP decisions. If a consultant engineer says 'these traffic projections are good' or a Council executive says 'these alleged economic effects are bad', ACP listens.

But as for evidence...

@olaln.bsky.social @irishdocsenv.bsky.social @tinydbass.bsky.social A claim repeatedly made by the NTA, TII, local authorities, elected representatives & various lobbyists is that road expansion is required to engineer modal shift.

TII was asked for evidence of same. They're still searching.
1. A modal switch from cars to public transport and active travel (such as walking or cycling).

2. An increased number of trips by public transport and active travel.

3. An overall reduction in traffic volume.

4. A reduced number of car trips.

Could you please provide information on any road projects that have achieved these outcomes? This could include data on:

- The specific project(s) that achieved these outcomes

- The location(s) of the project(s)

- The methodology used to measure the outcomes

- Any relevant statistics or data that demonstrate the success of the project(s) I wish acknowledge receipt of your correspondence of 7 September 2025 and I apologise for the delay in responding.

The matter is still receiving attention and a further reply will issue as soon as possible.

Kind regards

The images used by advocates for the second #GalwayCityRingRoad clearly show traffic-filled inbound roads, while outbound lanes are uncongested or entirely empty. Perhaps this is why they've pivoted from complaining about bypass traffic to hyping the importance of what they call "strategic" traffic.
cosaingalway.bsky.social
The presence of a commuter bus is possible but relatively unlikely in typical peak morning traffic on the N6/M6.

Even though the #N6GCRR promoters now acknowledge that only 1% of traffic bypasses Galway, they still refuse to address all of the key implications.

Biofuels is an example of a tool used as an excuse for inaction when we already have a range of well-proven tools in the toolbox from prioritising active travel and public transport to enabling electric car use:

The profligate wastefulness of heat engines also explains why biofuels are a giant folly and environmental disaster.

1) Russia doesn't tend to its wounded very often.

2) Missing are zeroed soldiers they left to rot on the battlefield.

3) Zeroed are the obvious ones.

4) You can basically add all the columns together and say they were zeroed and 2025 isn't over yet.

Just 3% of the land now used for biofuels could generate the same energy with solar panels, sufficient to power nearly one third of all cars worldwide if they were EVs. Electrifying transport is far more efficient, cuts emissions more steeply, and frees up farmland for food and possible rewilding.

How do we make sense of, or detect a coherent narrative in, all of this apparent chaos?

The 2017 Atlantic article cited here by @jennycohn.bsky.social refers to the first Trump White House as "a tangle of competing interests and factions".

It's much worse now. Is it strategy or mere lunacy?

Ukraine will be rebuilt, eventually. Its geography may also be conducive to massive development of renewable energy.

Nuclear & fossil fuel infrastructure has proved especially vulnerable to hostile military intervention.

Perhaps one solution is a diversified, interconnected zero carbon grid?

Trump has long believed that he is politically untouchable.

His re-election in 2024 only confirmed that, hence his extreme willingness now to do whatever he wants regardless of its legality or acceptability. Pardoning Maxwell would be just another killer move.

The above is pure speculation, tbh.

What is clear, however, is that Trump and his senior MAGA cultists are absolutely determined to disassociate him from all things Epstein.

Trump most likely believes that he can pardon Maxwell and get away with it scot free.
