New plan for Clontarf Baths keeps Dublin Bay cycle path straight and widens it
It has been a few years in the making, but the new plan for Clontarf Baths car parking includes streamlining the two-way cycle path by removing a previously planned restrictive bend and widening the path. While Dublin City Council has been involved in or at least consulted with the cycle path design, this section of the route is on private property, and so the planning application for the design is being made by the owner of the Clontarf Baths building, the Clontarf Baths and Assembly Rooms Company Ltd.

Roll out of two zebra crossings delayed by councillors to proceed on Dublin’s York Street
Dublin City Council is now proceeding with the installation of two zebra crossings on York Street, between the Royal College of Surgeons buildings, off St Stephen's Green. The installation of the crossings was delayed by some local councillors. The above photo, taken in late November, shows that the zebra crossing signs were covered in black bags, and the zebra crossing markings were not added.

Government and opposition TDs, Senators and councillors have been calling for catering on Irish Rail services to be restored since the pandemic, but Freedom of Information records show that the Department of Transport has vetoed funding requests for the loss-making service, which is understood to cost around €2.1 million per year. The issue of a lack of a catering trolley or shop on board trains to Limerick, Galway, Waterford, Mayo, Kerry, Sligo, and Wexford.

Raised crossings and continuous footpaths are safety and mobility measures — it’s a red flag that some disability campaigners are fighting them
Comment & Analysis: Just before Christmas, a small number of disability campaigners told a joint Oireachtas meeting between the Committee on Disability Matters and the Committee on Transport of their dislike of continuous footpaths, and one mentioned raised crossings. It is worrying that such basic safety and mobility measures are being targeted. As covered in an explainer on continuous footpaths…

This finding of "hidden" public support for green policies strongly echoes our work on pluralistic ignorance when it comes to non-car travel: most people support non-car travel more than car travel, but at the same time they believe this is a minority view

To anybody who supports sustainable transport: Please stop saying “car restrictions” just move cars elsewhere, it’s just not true
Comment & Analysis: In the past, it was mainly said by opponents of giving space to walking, cycling and buses, but more recently, a number of media commentators who are generally supportive of active travel and public transport have claimed that bus priority measures in Dublin City Centre have just moved cars to other streets. There's no data to back this up, and long-term data show a nearly annual decline in the number of cars entering Dublin City Centre at peak times.

Galway post office asks if school traffic calming will “close us down” despite over 260 car parking spaces closer to it than new scheme
-- Scheme aims to slow down traffic outside school and add visibility around crossings.-- Narrowing is not restrictive for motorists with carragway wider than schemes on major roads.-- Project labelled by council as "Active Travel Scheme", but it's a school traffic calming project. A post office has claimed that a planned front-of-school traffic calming scheme -- which is basic in its nature -- will affect its business despite the planned works being over 110 metres from the shop and the project not affecting on-street car parking around the shop.

Comment & Analysis: Car-free Capel St has been in place since 2022, and Parliament St followed it this year. Both are examples of interim street changes -- the streets have been redesigned quickly, with a longer-term redesign still pending. This is a good approach, but some things need to move faster. Interim street changes need to make a little more sense, and not try to impose past thinking on pedestrians, people cycling, or drivers.
