Dad. Iowan. Former HS social studies teacher.
Was able to attend the subcommittee virtually, and ended up being the last member of the public to speak on the bill.

90 minutes before the hearing.
99 public comments on the bill.
100% against it.

There's a subcommittee in the Iowa legislature this morning mulling over increasing school funding at just 1.75%, even lower than the governor's proposed 2%.

When did Iowa schools become "failing schools"? When the state abandoned its obligation in order to pursue a narrow political agenda.

Helping 6th grade Ts plan a VERY cool podcast project making historical/thematic connections from the events of the book Making Bombs for Hitler to present day issues of human rights and migration. The parallels are, uh, not looking good!

If you're an Iowan who wants a better understanding of school finance and how to "fight wonky" to get the public schools we deserve. Join Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement & @schooldaves.bsky.social for a virtual meetup to do just that!

As a distraction from The Horrors & in lieu of doomscrolling, I've had this beautiful narrative solo game, Storyfold: Wildwoods, set up on my table this week to play through.

It merges tight, addictive mechanics with a surprisingly compelling story similar to the Ori videogame series. 9/10 for me!

You can see the progression and escalation here. I told them it was nothing against them, but we were already in the "Free Speech Zone" they established, POTUS is free to take another route, and we're not moving. So we didn't.

A couple of good signs from today's protest outside the president's event today in Clive, Iowa.

Be good.
Humanity is not partisan.

I told him good luck as he strolled into the crowd. He's in there somewhere.
January 27, 2026 at 9:42 PM
Hey, someone sent a photo of me.
January 27, 2026 at 9:39 PM
There hadn't been movement for a while and I was frozen solid so I decided to leave. Then as I'm walking out to catch a ride I see this guy strolling up...

Godspeed buddy.
January 27, 2026 at 9:32 PM
I don't know how it has impacted the president's movement, but this crowd said no to the police and stayed put. Nothing else has happened. I am a human-sicle.
January 27, 2026 at 9:00 PM
The crowd has been arguing with Iowa State patrol, lots of local police have showed up as well. Crowds are going nowhere.
January 27, 2026 at 8:39 PM
More Secret Service trying to move people. Not a lot of movement.
January 27, 2026 at 8:17 PM
Secret Service moving people back to the far curb for security reasons.
January 27, 2026 at 8:12 PM
Another view walking north along 100th.
January 27, 2026 at 8:11 PM
People lined up along 100th, assuming the president will be entering the events center from this side.
January 27, 2026 at 8:08 PM
Nearly 2pm. Crowd size is probably closer to 500 now along all parts of the intersection. Some talk of moving the protest to intersect Trump's entrance to the event center.
January 27, 2026 at 7:50 PM
Another view of the intersection outside the horizon event center in Clive, Iowa where President Trump is slated to speak this afternoon
January 27, 2026 at 7:23 PM
The protest is set up at the intersection where there's the only entrance to the event center. As ticket holders and attendees get backed up, has led to interactions between protesters ostensibly here to see the president. Clive, Iowa
January 27, 2026 at 7:16 PM
The crowd right now is angry and there has been some heavy antagonism from Trump supporters driving through the intersection (with a lot of support, too). For it being so cold, it's a lot more heated than I imagine the Indivisible crowd will be later.
January 27, 2026 at 7:06 PM
Captures it pretty well:
January 27, 2026 at 6:52 PM
Good number of people (~200?) around the intersection of 100th & Swanson, where the northbound road is closed. 2 degrees with the wind chill. Indivisible protest scheduled at 2pm.
