Stories and Totalitarianism by Václav Havel -

"On the surface of things, everything goes on just as it does anywhere else: people work, have fun, make love, die. Beneath this surface a destructive disease is gnawing away.

'Call me when the man dies.'"

Stories and Totalitarianism by Václav Havel
A friend of mine who is heavily asthmatic was sentenced, for political reasons, to several years in prison, where he suffered a great deal because his cellmates smoked and he could scarcely breathe…

Every American I've known who has received medical or emergency treatment in a country with socialized healthcare sings its praises. Apparently some of them return without internalizing that lesson...

Free healthcare to all residents of the US regardless of immigration status would rule, actually. Universal benefits for universal problems (having a body that can get sick or hurt)

Does anyone have any good recommendations for middle school nonfiction books about gender norms?

My 10yo loves books like Lumberjanes, The Moth Keeper, A Song for You and I, and many other fiction/graphic novels that explore gender themes, & I'd love to get something that explains them!

My last 3 years of full-time work would not be possible at all if not for Twitter, though social media in general feels less dynamic and more like a liability these days. The ecosystem is entirely different than it used to be.

Shout out to the Captain Planet of our time:
epic handshake meme where one arm reads depression, the other anxiety, and they shake hands on not able to do anything and feeling bad about it the whole time

CW: protester being struck in the head by a pepper ball

Footage I took earlier of the moment Reverend David Black, a regular protester outside of the Broadview Detention Center, was shot in the head with a pepper ball by ICE agents on the roof of the facility.

Love living in a country where I pass roadside signs for GUN SHOW to pick up my kids from school the same day they bring home gun locks and a notification about upcoming ALICE training.

Talk about mixed messages.

I had to drop everything and share this incredible public domain photo on Wikimedia Commons called rat_selfie_1:

This is true for students too. Yes there are many factors impacting student reading, but working 30+ hours a week to be able to afford college is definitely one of them.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

Did this today and it was a 10/10—could not have gone better, could not be more excited to lean into it for our upcoming unit!

Okay @mraleosays.bsky.social, diving into literary theory on Monday and have absolutely no clue how it will go!

(That said: it is really, really fun as a teacher sometimes to try something 100% new and outside of your wheelhouse)

Covid-19 linked to higher vascular dementia risk. A new study found adults over 50 who had Covid-19 were more likely to develop vascular dementia than those who never had it. Those with prior mental health conditions faced the greatest risk. www.nature.com/articles/s44...

And it's not always going to be the case that what works to triage the lowest performing system is necessarily what works for better functioning systems! Of course some patients are going to need the triple bypass, but that should not become the new standard of care.
