“Inventing the Renaissance” is a history of histories of this (not so) golden age. Much of making history is simply adding new POVs to the braid as historians ask new & more diverse questions w/ each generation. I hope you’ll enjoy my effort to show the process at work! 25/25 https://buff.ly/4j6qkoS
The Vasari corridor bending around the Mannelli tower, whose tall stone edifice blocks its otherwise gentle descent. Last week my story about this building made it a celebration of resistance against conquerors, as the bend in the corridor shows the citizens of the city defying the tyrant who wanted to blast his corridor through the ancient tower that was the birthright of an old respected family, and was forced to go around, leaving this bend which has stood ever since as a symbol of resistance against the tyrant. From the inside, it's a super awkward narrow twisty space where you have to turn, and anyone with a walker or a scooter struggles to make the turns. Looks very different depending on your point of view, literally and figuratively!

Sang Hollister's 'Popes in Rome & Avignon' song today in my medieval class. When I finished I looked up to see a student recording my butchering of the ditty. Can't wait for that to get out.

Bellow is a copy of the November 2004 UCLA History newsletter that includes selections from his repertoire.
A page from the November 2004 UCLA History Newsletter, which includes a picture and write up of Hollister and some of his songs. The song I sang was to the tune of Old MacDonald. The lyrics are: Popes in Rome and Avignon, e-i-e-i-o, One named Clement, one named John, e-i-e-i-o. With one pope here and the other pope there, and Here a pope, there a pope, everywhere a pope, pope. At Pisa back in fourteen nine, e-i-e-i-o, A Council thought they'd fix things fine, e-i-e-i-o. With one pope here and another pope there, and Here a pope, there a pope, everywhere a pope, pope. The churchmen said, "It's too absurd," e-i-e-i-o, "We'll fire them both and pick a third," e-i-e-i-o. So with two popes here and a third pope there, and Here a pope, there a pope, is there any hope? Nope! Three's a crowd, or so I've heard, e-i-e-i-ooo!

This is a very encouraging move in Europe to better protect intersex people.

Captured something interesting a couple of days ago - colourful satellites. I've seen blue Starlinks before but not green and blue ones together. What's with the different colours? Apparently it's all to do with different coatings they have. More info in the ALT. #Astronomy #Space #Astrophotography
Two Starlink satellite trails, one green and one blue. They are passing through Gemini on 5 October 2025 at 04:35 UT. The bright stars above the green trail are Castor and Pollux. The bright object at the end of the blue trail is Jupiter. Taken with a Canon 600D and 50mm lens at 10s exp, 50mm fl, f/1.8, ISO-800.

I know that the blue ones are due to a coating on the newer 'Direct to Cell' satellites that is supposed to make them less visible in the night sky. Apparently the latest coatings have a green hue, meant to make them even less visible (I assume). Satellite mega constellations are the vermin of the sky but in some circumstances make for an interesting picture.

This is Denni. She took an unexpected babysitting shift when she found a baby koala in her yard. She cheerfully delivered the joey to her human, who put them back in the tree to be reunited with their mom. 14/10 (FB: Steve Lamplough)
Denni, a golden retriever with a sweet face, sits and looks up at the camera with a smile. she has a passenger clinging to her back. a baby koala. the joey's eyes peak over the top of Denni's head. Denni is standing and looking off to the left of the frame. the baby koala on her back looks at the camera. a super zoomed photo of the baby koala and their mom high up in a tree. the adult koala holds onto her joey and looks down at the camera with what we would like to think is appreciation for caring for her baby.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections
