I went to a huge party and thought a bunch of people would know. But no one knew what I was...except for people who were already my friends! Hahaha

Also, related, the time I was the Voynich Manuscript for Halloween and painted my own version of Voynich and made it into a manuscript dress.
A woman wearing a dress painted with cryptic language and flowers. Also her skin is painted with cryptic things. A close up of a Voynich bodice, with encrypted language and a couple of mystery flowers.

Wheee! Exciting to see this replaying - it's an awesome performance by Becca Blackwell, and also one of my favorite stories I've ever written.

This is my favorite thing I've seen in ages, and also it is precisely my daily life with a 6-year-old lair companion named Grimoire, and a whole bunch of facsimile codices on the shelves.

Not sure? It's a medieval monster conference keynote, so I don't think it's being streamed? But it might be.

going to start using the equivalent of “a writer’s writer” for everything—“an abyss’s abyss,” “the twins’ twins,” “the absolute fucker’s absolute fucker”

Sitting at a bar after teaching my class on writing from the world's myths & stories, catching up on today's events, thinking about ancient world graffiti and how lots of it is just people saying essentially, FUCK. In both 'yep, I fucked here' ways & 'fuck, I hate everything' ways.

My OB-GYN friend posted this elsewhere, from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
SCIENCE IS CLEAR:
there is no link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism in children.
High-quality studies confirm acetaminophen's safety for use during pregnancy.
Pregnant patients can continue to rely on this trusted medicine for managing pain and fever.

The New Vegetarian Epicure is the cookbook that made me a good cook - I got it when I was in college and it taught me so many things. I still cook from it all the time.

I made cornbread & my child thought it smelled like pizza cooking so he requested garlic tomato sauce as a dip. This is a good & comforting thing to make for dinner. Who doesn't need good & comforting right now? (The cornbread's Anna Thomas' New Vegetarian Epicure recipe, see pics)
A round of bronzed cornbread in a cast iron skillet, straight from the oven. A slice of that cornbread in a shallow round bowl with a colorful bowl containing garlic tomato sauce beside it. Anna Thomas' New Vegetarian Epicure Honey Buttermilk Cornbread recipe.

Honey Buttermilk Cornbread
from The New Vegetarian Epicure by Anna Thomas
Serves 8
1 cup (120 g) white flour
1 1/2 cups (340 g) cornmeal
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
3 large eggs
1 1/3 cups (320 ml) buttermilk
3 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons (30 g) butter, melted
Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
Sift together the flour, cornmeal, soda, baking powder and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, honey and melted butter. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, stirring gently just until the lumps are gone (don’t overmix). Pour the batter into a buttered 12 x 15-inch baking dish and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a tester inserted in the center of the cornbread comes out clean. Cut into squares and serve hot or warm.

This is a nifty write up of both sets of novels—go read GENERATION LOSS!—plus an interview with me about why Aud, with her “slivers of strangeness” is a “unique character who could enliven a book in any genre”. Quite right!
The badass return of crime novels by Nicola Griffith and Elizabeth Hand
Griffith’s Aud Torvingen novels and Hand’s Cass Neary series are back in new editions and they’re terrific.

Hahahahaa I mean, the thing that would really happen is that we'd meet on the headlands and start laughing because we like to hang out. We might have swords, but we wouldn't be fighting eachother. @emilyrcwilson.bsky.social

Force animates the word (har comes from heri, a Germanic word for troop, martial band), but so does refuge (berga, a built space of safety, a secure dwelling in a world imagined as inimical). Harbinger is danger and omen at once, refuge and seeker, force and announcement.

obsessed w the medieval origin of harbinger, it's an amazing word:
traveled from Old Saxon through medieval French, conveys in origins harbor, a place of safety. A medieval harbinger was one who provides lodging, as well as one who travels ahead in search of safe dwelling, a herald and guarantor.
