One thing I have tried that's seemed successful is treating novels more like we're in the nineteenth century getting installments over time. When you think about it, reading a Dickens novel in a week rather than over a year is like binging a full Netflix series.

It's a great photo. Thanks for your good work against the stupidity of banning access to ... books. And to knowing things.

obsessed w the medieval origin of harbinger, it's an amazing word:
traveled from Old Saxon through medieval French, conveys in origins harbor, a place of safety. A medieval harbinger was one who provides lodging, as well as one who travels ahead in search of safe dwelling, a herald and guarantor.

the name of a neighborhood near me and every time I run or bike by it I curse myself for the missed opportunity of living there

Force animates the word (har comes from heri, a Germanic word for troop, martial band), but so does refuge (berga, a built space of safety, a secure dwelling in a world imagined as inimical). Harbinger is danger and omen at once, refuge and seeker, force and announcement.

Everything Douglas Adams says.
Douglas Adams (Author of Hitchiker's Gude To The Galaxy)
I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies

1 Anything that is in the world when you're born is normal and ordinary and just a natural part of the way the world works

2 Anything that is invented between when you're fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.

3 Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

Important corrective to how we often talk about higher education and college students in America. Some facts and figures (see NYT article at end for further elucidation):

43 percent of (19 million) undergrads attend community college

75 percent of community college students enrolled part time

Back in 2018 I left the blog I founded and I miss the chance to write in public it used to offer. I have been trying to write more, we'll see what (if anything) this project becomes:

I love the return of the notebook! Not that I ever abandoned them myself (and not that I am against good AI use either -- it is a career class so students have to be cognizant of how some jobs will desire proficiency).

(Not that it should ever be humanities vs natural sciences: we are all in it together. Or should be.)
jeffreyjcohen.bsky.social
it doesn't have to be this way

also: universities save very little money by reducing relatively low cost programs like most humanities disciplines

think of how many students you could fund for how many years if you forwent one piece of lab equipment

(and yes I am well aware that some students will require an accommodation, that is 100% fine, that is what we do)
