I was immensely lucky that every image I requested for By Your Side was approved. It was a huge relief to have those and some great original work by Rica Takashima as well.

On another platform, @debaoki.bsky.social wrote a magnificent rant about how many of these books are killed by Japan's uncompromising image rights restrictions.

Comics are a visual medium. To properly write books discussing comics, you NEED visuals. But for Japanese publishers, the answer is no.

I am still immensely salty about this. DK asked me 4 times to work on this book while I was recovering from Long Covid. From day one. we all explained how the image licensing would have to be.

As Zack said, we got paid. But we will never have the pleasure of seeing our names on the same book.
