Rentoul is usually wrong about things. He calls himself a Blairite but he was gushing with praise for Boris Johnson during his time as PM and I’m pretty sure he even called him the “heir to Blair” at one point

It surely isn’t about “national security” but purely the continued future of the regime.

It’s exactly what Cameron did in the the run up to the Brexit referendum—tried to get special treatment for the UK from the EU. All that failed effort achieved was to add further fuel to anti-EU sentiment.
